So, my roommate is about to buy a new MacBook and she's currently a student. Can I use her student discount if I go to the store with her and then use my own credit card?

Yea, they seem to be pretty lax about it as long as there is an ID being used.

Don't be too blatant about it. This sort of thing can get the attention of the school, which can crack down on the store, and even boot it off campus. In other words, do NOT screw things up for the students!

But as wtmcgee says, they're pretty laid back about proof of student status.

I'm actually doing the same sort of thing. I'm buying an iMac, through my girlfriend's student discount, even though my girlfriend is going to school in a different state than where we'll be buying the iMac. I asked an employee at my local Apple Store and she said that it was no problem to do such a thing. I neglected to mention we were buying it for me. I told her my girlfriend was about to graduate, wanted to get a new iMac but wanted to have it here waiting for her when she moved back.

Yeah, I fibbed to save $250, so what?

Just remember that the cost of a new Mac with student discount, plus sales tax, often is higher than the cost of buying it from Amazon, which gives substantial discounts (in the form of rebate checks, submitted online). Amazon has free shipping on them, too, and no sales tax in most states.

isn't it better to buy it from Apple in case of problems . . . such as MacBook's Shutdown problem?

Nope. It makes no difference -- all warranty service is done through Apple (or an authorized service center), regardless of where it was bought (as long as it's bought from an authorized reseller, which Amazon is).

In fact, it may be better to buy from Amazon, because they have a MUCH more liberal return policy if something is wrong with a brand-new item: if you get a lemon, you just send it back and they ship a new one.

The only downside is that you can't do build-to-order through Amazon, so you are limited to the default configurations. But in the MacBook, both RAM and hard disks are super-easy to upgrade, and buying said upgrades are cheaper elsewhere.

Does Amazon even have the new iMacs for sale? I'm not seeing them.

Yep. Take a gander. $1999 with a $150 rebate as of 1945 CDT (now). They have Minis, MacBooks and MacBook Pros too.

so then . . . places like macmall and other places that offer free ram and free parallels might be a better place to get it too, huh?

so far . . it seems the choices are for a 24 inch iMac with 2GB of Ram, 250GB HD, and 7300 Card

Amazon
Apple Store w/Student Discount

anywhere else?
