Old Macs rule!!

Now, I have an old LC475 and want to set it up mainly as an internet client;

This is the software I need:

- a web browser (NN 4.08, IE ???)
- an email client (eudora ???)
- an hotline client (v. 1.2.3 68k should do)
- some m$ office stuff (sorry!, nut the 475 is not for me...)
- stuffit (something that can extract 5.5 sit files)
- filemaker (v. 3?)

What do you recomend?

About the 475, who much ram needed ?
Which MacOS? (7.5.5??)

tnxs!

If Netscape 4.x does not work (I am using 4.08, it is working okay with me), give 3.01 a try.
Eudora: On my old 68040 Macs, I used Eudora 1.54 and I was pleased. You might try Eudora 3.1.3, I like it very much.
Hotline: Sorry, I do not know anything about this service.
MS Office: My PowerMac 7300 came with a bundled Office 4.2 (I never opened the wrapping, you know), there should be very cheap second-hand CDs available at auctions.
OS version: Do not stay with 7.6, if you can get the upgrade to 7.6.1. This would be most probably the best version for the 475.
RAM: If you happen to get a 32 MB module, your friend would have a total of 36 MB - very comfortable. 20 MB will do fine for most purposes, though.

Some web sites recommended (with tips for hardware and software):
Low End Mac
http://lowendmac.com/
Eden.com: Connect Classic Macs to the Web
http://www.eden.com/~arena/jagshouse...cOnTheWeb.html
MacAddict Special: This Old Mac
http://www.macaddict.com/troubleshooting/oldmac/
Most of these sites refer to compact Macs like SE and Classic, but the software recommended there will work fine on a 475, too, as a starter. You may try experimenting your way up later with slightly newer versions.

Good luck,

Walter.

Office 98 is for PPC only. Netscape 4.X will not work. The latest version you can use for a 68LC040 475 which I have btw is 4.08. 7.6.1 is the best OS cause it doesn't hog ram. And if you can, get the appearence extention and control panel from OS 8 and the whole interface will be plantiumized. I got my 475 to work with slightly over 2.5 megs of ram for OS. I am using stuffit 5.1.4 just fine to extract all files. Get word 5.1 and version that is later is tooooooooooo slow. Good luck.

The appearance extension will be slow and buggy in OS 7.6.1, but that's the right OS to be using on that machine. And it will take any 72-pin 32M SIMM you put in it and use it comfortably. The 475 is still a good machine, but recognize it's limitations. AOL and it's associated browser, version 4, will run just fine on that machine if you don't mind using AOL.

I have several 68K's. I say OS 8.1. That's what I use on my Quadra 700 and my two Powerbook 500's. Use Communicator for your email and the web. 4.08 because you can't use 3.x anymore, but that's no big deal, 4 works just fine. I reccomend Apple/Claris works instead of M$, but I doubt that will happen. As far as ram, 20MB is more than enough to get by on a 68K on 8.1. But it's so cheap, I suggest you go to ebay and buy yourself a 32MB SIMM. That and the 4 you have soldered on the mobo will max you out at 36MB. As far as AOL goes, IT DOESN'T. Any version of AOL from 3.0 up, in my expirience, brings any 68K machine to a SKREETCHING HAULT!!! I have a LAN set up so all my 68K's connect over ethernet via DHCP. By the way the DHCP server [IPNR] along with apple web sharing both run on the Quadra 700 under 8.1 with 20 MB RAM and a 2 GB hard drive.

Oh yeah, and as far as hotline goes, technicall all version of the client that are 68K compatible have expired and can't be used... But i have a hacked version of 1.5.5 for 68K that works just fine, email me if you need it.

tnxs everybody for the input!

I'll try MacOS 8.1, maxing the ram, eudora 3.1.3, Hotline Client 1.2.3 68K, anarky, word5.1, fm3, netscape 4.0.8

eventually will try MacOS 7.6.1, mail via Communicator;

last question: is someone using a Palm Desktop applicaiton?
If yes, which version (if any) works really fine from your experience?

l008com: the quadra 700 is really one of the coolest 68k mac, I have one of them doing light server job and the last time i touched it was, guess 1997...

You've got to be kidding though..an LC 475 will be very slow, and difficult to use for whoever you are giving it to.

Low end power macs cost less than $100. Don't waste money buying ram for an LC 475 unless you can get it on ebay or something. Most power macs will have cdrom drives, which will make installing software much, much easier. You can probably pick up a 6100 or 7100, 7200, etc really cheap.

The only 040 macs I use anymore are high end quadras and even these are pretty slow.

The 475 is going to be painfully slow under some of that config. As far as web browsers are concerned, try running iCab. It isn't perfect, but is quite good. Max out your ram and do not run OS8. run 7.6.1 because it is highly optmized for 68k.

I will warn you, you are not going to get good performance out of this box no matter what you do.
