Okay, I'm using a 2nd gen iMac with system 9.0.4. I want to change my internal HD icon and cannot. I have a hazy memory of a setting somewhere saying "Lock HD icon" but have absolutely no idea where it is despite looking all over. Any help would be appreciated.

Control click you HD icon and select "get info" Then you can check locked or not check it. You can also paste a different icon on the icon of the HD and have a custom icon. http://www.icons.cx is a good place to go.

Also, be sure that File Sharing is off. If your hard drive is shared, then you won't be able to modify the icon.
