Mac Mail and IMAP receive schedule?

Can anyone explain how IMAP is supposed to work in terms of its receive schedule?
I have IMAP set up for my Gmail and Zoho accounts. In Mail, I have my receive schedule set to "every 5 minutes". If an email arrives to either of my IMAP addresses, I only see the emails when Mail makes its 5-minute check. I know that's how POP works, but I thought that with IMAP, any emails arriving at an IMAP address would appear *instantly* in Mail?
Or is it that IMAP is just like POP, and you basically have to wait until Mail goes and checks?

The latter, although there is such thing as push IMAP and a part of the IMAP spec called IDLE which help facilitates this, but no set standard for doing this AFAIK. The IDLE spec allows the server to keep connections open so that new connections don't have to open and therefore the client can continue to receive mail constantly, but it is up to the client to provide these notifications.
Do you have IMAP IDLE enabled in OS X Mail?

Yes, I do unfortunately (and yes, I'm aware of the IDLE spec). That was why I was confused...then again, I also tried it in Outlook 2011 for Mac, and had the same problem. So as you say, it may just be a poor implementation of IMAP.

Or your IMAP server not supporting iDLE or having it enabled. I might have misspoke too, I think it is the server that has to notify the client on top of IDLE.
