Any good free virus checkers?

Are there any free virus and file cleaning apps. I tried to use Google Chrome and was informed I had many redundant files and a virus's so didn't proceed. I never bothered before. I see MacKeeper advertised and recommended but costs a bit. Before I authorise I thought I would check here first.

DON'T TOUCH MacKeeper !!!!!!
I know that it got some good reviews (even from sites I would actually trust) but it's advertising alone is even worse than any virus I know!
ClamXav is a good free virus checker!

The only people recommending MacKeeper are MacKeeper themselves. The fact that most of their advertising resembles spam should give you pause. Avoid it like the plague.
As BadIdea suggests, ClamXav is a good, free anti-virus app.

I thirdly vote for ClamXAV, and second the warning for Mackeeper - it does nothing and is a scam to get your money "to fix" things.

Clam works fine, it's easy on you and your resources, and it doesn't suck. All good reasons to go with it.

I vote for...nothing. If you are smart about not clicking email links or downloading and opening weird apps, you should not have any problems. I can't remember the last time I used anti-virus software on a Mac.

As others have said, MacKeeper IS MALWARE, you don't want it, ever.
ClamXAV is a good way to go. But chances are you don't have any Mac malware anyway... It's just really, really hard to get it. Mostly I see adware, which is a bit different in intent and can be cleared up with Adware Medic (donationware).
Remember, any anti-virus software you run is extremely likely to turn up positive results, but these are nearly always Windows-specific and don't represent a threat to your system unless you are running Windows in VM software or Bootcamp (in which case you need a Windows-specific product).
