Actually, there is. Much of the third-party hardware stuff doesn't get discounted. And there's better deals to be found on educational-licensed third-party software.

Apple refurbs (click the red Sale tag) are usually cheaper as well.
As to it not being worth the hassle, umm...what hassle exactly? Aside from clicking a couple extra times to GET to the edu store, it's exactly like shopping from the regular Apple store. If you a eligible, why not?

If you are a student, you can get Student ADC from developer.apple.com for ~100 dollars (not sure what the subscription fee is in England) and buy the G5s for 1399, 1899, 2299 pounds respectively.

There are no forms. Just buy it from the apple store, show them ure student id and u get the discount. simple as that.
