Just a day after their release, the Office for iPad apps are already in high positions in the Top Free and Top Grossing charts at the App Store. The top three Free apps are currently Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, in that order; a related Microsoft app, OneNote, is in fourth. Word is #5 on the Top Grossing chart, while Excel is 12th, and PowerPoint is 29th.
The disparity in the Grossing chart is likely attributable to Word's popularity and the way Microsoft's subscription scheme works. Word is the centerpiece of Office and its most popular app, since writing is a more common task than spreadsheets or presentations. A single Office 365 subscription enables editing in all three apps, so most people are presumably paying through Word and simply unlocking Excel and PowerPoint with their logins.
Microsoft's real success is difficult to gauge. Apple is taking a 30 percent cut from in-app subscriptions, but it's entirely possible to pay for a 365 subscription via the web, or simply use one provided by an employer. Amazon is selling one-year 365 Home Premium subscriptions for $67.15, well under the $100 Microsoft normally charges.

My wife downloaded it. To her disappointment, subscription ($$) is a requirement (even if you are not planning to use the cloud which is OneDrive or DriveOne or OneDriveOneDriveOne). If your workplace is paying for it, that's great. I have to say the interface is very sleek. I can see it will be popular among office users. Microsoft, great work on the iPad Office Suite and it's time to close down Surface.

Coffee time, you do realize that you can sign up for a 30 day trial through Microsoft? Your subscription includes the latest Office Professional for Windows and Mac? The sub allows for up to 5 installs on a Mac or PC.
If your wife were to get the subscription, not only would she get 20 GB of storage but if she added you to the subscription, you would not only be able to install office but you would also get 20GB of storage. It effectively can give you up to 100 GB of extra storage if you have five accounts attached to the subscription and five copies of office for either windows or mac.
