It's popped up on my PowerBook as well.

Very strange, I wonder why it's on both my machines.

Well I have applied it to both my machines and they seem fine.

No idea why it popped up though, as my machines are always up to date, I check daily.

Do any of you have Jaguar installed on another partition? I remember the java update was pulled last month and Apple were going to release it again once some issues were resolved.

Both on the internal drives.

I did an easy install right over the top of 10.2.8

I then applied all the updates and then 10.3.1 when it came out.

I have had no problems with any of it.

It seems I am the first to get it via Software Update then !! Quite a surprise.

The Apple Web Site says :

Download Details

Company: Apple

Version: 1.4.1 (Panther)

Post Date: 11/12/03

License: Update

File Size: 41MB

System Requirements

Mac OS X 10.3 or later

The Java Update delivers functional enhancements and improved stability for running Java applications and applets. It contains support for both Java 1.4.1 and Java 1.3.1. It is strongly recommended that all users install this update.

Yeah, it's strange, I'm not seeing it through SU yet. I hope they have the update for Jaguar too.

So did mine after I repaired it by reinstalling the Java package. Perhaps that what this is? Maybe also network related?

According to Pacifist, the original Java package on the Panther install disks was 57.1 MB.

The download site at apple is:

after java -version I get

HotSpot not at correct virtual address. Sharing disabled.
java version "1.4.1_01"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.1_01-69.1)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.1_01-24, mixed mode)

before and after this update I think.

What does that mean?
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

This was a problem before. What you do is:

Rename the /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework to another name (say JavaVM.framework.old)

and reinstall the upgrade on top of itself.

Afterwards you won't get the hotspot error.

I have a friend who works for Apple. He says the update is not really a new version of Java, but that it does have some updated security certificates. So I installed it even though I already had 1.4.1.

I'm not allowed to rename anything in the System folder. And who knows whether that update will install anything necessary then.

42 MBs of updated certificates? That makes no sense.

I've got the most up to date version of Java after clean installing off my 10.3 disk. I also installed XCode off the DevTools disk so I guess that put the latest java in.

Is it possible that Apple may update the Look and Feel of Swing widgets for 10.3 Panther? I guess I'll found out when I install panther this weekend and plus this update as well....

I know. You'd think it would be smaller. But perhaps this is a full installer for those who don't already have Java. Who know? I installed it anyway.

I downloaded the update 3 times and every time I get an invalid checksum when I try to mount the disk image. On 10.3.1.

Over on VersionTracker one of the people who posted back comments made reference to the developer note included with this update. Basically, it's for people who did an Upgrade install right over top of 10.2.x. In some cases, the Upgrade installer failed to properly update Java, making it necessary for Apple to release this stand-alone Java update. This is exactly the kind of reason that I always do an Erase & Install for major upgrades.

Question is, does our experience support this explanation? Who is getting it to show up in Software Update? Did you do an Upgrade, or Erase & Install?

I did an Erase & Install and there's nothing in Software Update.

P.S. Here's the link to the developer notes...

I did an Archive/Install; however, never saw the update...BUT, I did install XCode/Dev Tools which I've heard contains the latest Java 1.4.1 for Panther...maybe that's why?!?

The Archive & Install method is also unaffected. Only the Upgrade suffers from this.

I did a simple upgrade on 2 machines and Java showed up via Software Update.

It took less than 5 seconds to install and about 15 secs to optimize.

and the java update showed up today. i'm wondering if this might have caused some of the problems I've had loading some Web pages w/Safari post-panther, as well as some other problems.
Is that possible? What would the symptoms of a bad java update be?

My Java worked kinda OK before fixing. Here is what Macnn says:

A MacNN reader offers some details on the Panther-specific Java 1.4.1 update noted this morning: "The Java 1.4.1 update mentioned is only for people who have run the quicktime update (QT4J) and had it break their Java installation--which is a small few. The 1.4.1 update was released a while ago, this one simply fixes an issue where the Java Update might break after the QuickTime update. It will only appear in the Software Update if you have not installed the Java update 1.4.1 before (the original version). There is no new functionality here---just a different packaging."
