RDIMMs are not proprietary, they're JEDEC standard Registered DIMMs.

I stand corrected.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Also you can get USB to DVI boxes on eBay that have Mac drivers and are pretty cheap these days. $50 or so. No good for games or graphics, but fine for looking at code.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Pushing "retina" you say... as I recall they have one "retina" machine available for purchase today - the retina macbook pro. The resolution on that is 2880-by-1800, not much higher than a 27" iMac.

Besides, developers are not necessarily designers. And even if they were, the real goal should be resolution independence. So, as I said before, developers do not need 4k displays.

They have one retina machine?

Dude, they have zero new Mac Pros. This thing doesn't even exist yet. Wouldn't you surmise both those numbers will increase? Don't you expect Apple to release a 4K display?

If you're going for resolution independence, I can assure you working in resolutions less than the max available is shooting yourself in the foot.

@OreoCookie

WRT needing GPU power to push pixels, I haven't used the 1st gen. retina MBP, but I've heard the screen is laggy.

Sorry for not making it clear. I'm saying I got the MBP because of space and cost issues. If they weren't an issue I'd have gotten a desktop setup with multiple big monitors. That would have made me more efficient, not just for things like being able to see as much code as possible, but also for not having a buzzsaw fan two feet from my face. That gets really fatiguing.

This is not even mentioning efficiencies gained by a desktop CPU.

Professional cards like that are a complete ripoff. Most everyone I know just gets the gaming version, then just flashes the card via a 3rd party app to convince the BIOS/Windows that it's the pro version. It saves like $2500 per card.
