Hey All.

Certain mpeg files lock my desktop up when i try to play them using quicktime. The video
freezes, I can move my mouse around but can't click on anything, the dock doesn't animate
and I can't force quit. The only option is to hold down the power button till the machine shuts off and then turn it back on, which I know isn't the best thing to be doing.

-Quicksilver dual 800, gig of ram, 10.4.8, up to date FULL version of quicktime-

Anybody have any suggestions on how to stop this from happeing or what might
be wrong?

Thanks
Bill

Quick fix:

Use VLC or Mplayer.

Otherwise:

Post the file so we can see it.

mplayer works beautifully. Thanks. Isn't quicktime supposed to be able to
play mpeg files?

What do you mean by "post it here"? Put the file name? The whole file? How do I
do that?

I'm going to try VLC also.
Thanks again.

Thanks for getting back. There is a $19.95 plug in for the
already paid for FULL version of Quicktime?

C'mon Apple.

Thanks again.

Yes. There is no "FULL version of Quicktime". There is Quicktime Pro, which adds the ability to edit/save/fullscreen. There is also the MPEG2 plugin, which works with both Quicktime and Quicktime Pro.

If he can see the video before it "freezes" then he's not just missing the codec.

I don't think there's any way to diagnose this problem without having a copy of the file.

Thanks for the full/pro lesson.

I can see it, then it freezes along with the entire system.

Those weird mpg files that have corrupted indexes are usually porno or something. I doubt bighill will share the wealth

You're going to have to put up a file for us to see, or solve this yourself. No one anywhere is going to be able to solve this problem just from the information you've given. Honestly, it sounds more like your system (hardware or software) is the problem, not the files. But just for shits and giggles, what was the origin of these files, and are you sure they're mpeg? What does VLC's get info window say about codecs and resolutions and bitrates?

Try opening them in MPEG Streamclip, fix broken timecodes, and then save to a new MPEG.
