Vader doesn't have a military role, aside from being the Emperor's bulldog. As the Jedi declined, so much to almost be myth, so did he. Hence why one officer smartmouthed him as being obselete as the Jedi. He got schooled, but you get the idea that not many of the soldiers know what Vader is.
That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about his obviously being subordinate to Tarkin in that he stayed behind him and followed his orders. Two examples of subordinacy in the dialogue:
Leia: "Governor Tarkin, I should have expected to find you holding Vader's leash."
Tarkin: "You're sure the homing beacon is secure aboard their ship? I'm taking an awful risk, Vader. This had better work."
Obviously Vader's position got retconned in the future movies, but its just not something I had noticed until I rewatched A New Hope.
In the original movie, Vader has the Oddjob role with Tarkin as the Goldfinger. Once the movie was out and it became clear that Vader was so iconic, he got upgraded a bit.
In universe, this can sort of be explained if you understand that there has been a few years before Emprie. During that time, Vader has been upgraded in the Empire's power structure.

It's the difference between military leaders and political leaders. After the utter failure in Star Wars, Vader decided to consolidate power (upon the recommendation of the emperor) and moved into direct control of the armies. It's talked about in the official comics.

I was a little startled in III to hear "General Kenobi". I thought the Jedi were outside the military too. But then, that's the least of that movie's issues... poor Padme has been turned into a podperson.

Yes, it's always been there (unlike several edits George did in various releases of Ep IV like "close the blast doors!"). A bit of inconsistency from the concept, perhaps, but in the (I'll say it) prequels it was apparent that various Jedi were assigned ranks so as to lead the Clone Troopers - which allowed Palpatine to have the Jedi in positions where he could implement is "special order" and have the Clone Troopers off them.

IV does suffer from some bad acting, but at least no one goes rolling down a flower filled field when they should be, you know, being serious about the fate of the world, potential assassination, etc. Yes, we watched II last night. I did like the scenes that ObiWan was in, the clone/droid plot was interesting. Anakin was bearable in small doses/action scenes but I look forward to seeing the fan edit with most of the "romance/creepy stalking" cut out or improved. I fell asleep last time we watched and luckily missed most of it. Have no idea what Padme, formerly smart responsible queen, sees in this teenage psychopath. Also no idea why Anakin only sees fit to go rescue his mother 10 years late and then get all angsty about how he couldn't save her. Agh. Try visiting once in a while, dude. Send a card. Jedi's don't have phones? Tsk tsk.

Zahn addressed this in his books, at least in passing. Most people didn't believe in the Jedi to begin with, thinking they were a myth or a tall tale told to children. Even those who did know of them, or had met them (a very rare occurrence), often didn't think of them as being too important. Also you need to remember, there weren't any Jedi running around between Eps 3 & 4, so from the perspective of this story there had only been the Emperor, Vader, Luke, Leia (perhaps), Yoda (presumed dead), and Obi Wan (in hiding) over the last 40+ years.

If she'd referenced Jar Jar, she might have a very minor point, but Vader? That's just an idiot who can't be bothered to pay attention to the story (or who doesn't realize that Chasing Amy is a satirical comedy).

I wouldn't call out Lucas for casting one of the best voices ever for the bad guy, but I think you can call him out a little (just a little) for what got him there in the first place, which is not casting a single black person in the whole movie, and then fixing that by putting in Jones' voice.
I feel like we can all agree Chewbacca is the token black guy.

What she actually said:

In other words, Darth Vader wearing black is no different than the villain in a western wearing a black hat.

Yeah, now you're touching on what irritates me so much about "Progressives", especially in the media. If they don't have a point, they'll just make one up. That's in no way comparable to the idiocy that came out of Melissa Harris Perry's mouth. Check this out:

Saw it last night (3D VMAX. Worth it). Classic Star Wars. Made me feel bad for George Lucas and how misguided he was with the last three.
I had a few issues with the plot, but hey, Star Wars!
It's sad how he built Star Wars/Empire, but you can see in Jedi how badly things went. The best thing for the world was selling Star Wars to Disney. We'd be looking forward to Lucas' next shit project instead of going to the movies this weekend. How well did that animation movie of his do?
