I just got back on Sunday from a 24-day visit to Switzerland, and this time I took gazillions of pictures.

Wow, those are some amazing pictures. I never though the inside of a large airplane could look that cool!

And I disagree with Kevin-she may not be Swiss, but Nicole is a babe! New moms are always beautiful, and Nicole does it well. Jared's not bad either.

Great pictures, tooki. I'm jealous-I've never gotten to Europe, and Switzerland is one place I really want to go.

Great pics

Ah, I miss Switzerland. Migros, Zurisee, good locking people, clean commuter trains...
Lived in Zug for a year, was just great.

Nice pictures. What camera(s) did you use? I especially noticed the ones shot in the dark with the elluminated buildings. Also the picture taken from the plane showing the small clouds. Nice. Did you use photoshop?

I used two cameras: a Nikon D70s digital SLR with a Nikon 18-200mm VR lens and a Tokina 12-24mm ultrawide lens for photo outings, and a Sony DSC-W50 pocket digital that I took everywhere. I also had with me my carbon-fiber tripod and two Nikon flash units, but I didn't use any of those much.

All of the photos there are completely original other than resizing (I think one or two might have slight exposure adjustment in Aperture). No Photoshop whatsoever, not even color correction.

The flickr page represents the best 1/6 of the photos taken -- not including the ones I tossed away on the spot.

You don't know how many times, growing up, boys would come to me and say "Hey, you're Nicole's brother, right? Can you hook me up with her?" ::sigh::

But yeah, she's fallen into the mom role pretty well.

Those photos bring back memories of my trips to Switzerland. I enjoyed spending time in the Spring in Interlaken the most. The runoff water was the some of the bluest I've ever seen.

Who in your family lives there?

Tooki,

Nice pics. You have a pretty good eye for a shot.

What gauge is in your ears? I want to say somewhere around 0000 but it's hard to tell. I've got a 10 in my toungue, a 12 in each nipple and a 14's in each ear. I'd like to stretch my ears to a 10, but I'm not sure since I like my current earrings so much.
I like my water with hops, malt, hops, yeast, and hops.

Wow, this thread got short. More to the point: How many shots do you get rid of on the spot? I always wondered if I delete more than most people. Also, I frequently reduce resolution on pictures, if I think I won't print or crop them.

Hmmm, let's find out!

My Aperture project for this trip is about 1050 pix, but there are a lot of quasi-dupes (e.g. whole series of nearly identical shots from which I picked the best) that I haven't totally cleaned out yet.

At the beginning of the trip, the D70s was at image number 6160 or so, and at the end, at about 6755, so about 595 exposures. The DSC-W50 was at image 245 at the beginning, and 885 at the end, so 640 exposures. 595+640=1235, so I guess only about 5/6 of the exposures made it into Aperture and weren't immediately deleted (which is quite a few). Of the surviving 1050, I'd say that probably 1/3 could be tossed readily, and even more using careful comparison to other shots, just picking the best. In the end, I only put about 150 on flickr.

I tend to err on the side of not deleting in-camera, since often two exposures will look similar on the camera, but one will be noticeably better once on the computer. With 1GB cards in each camera (neither of which I have ever come close to filling up), I just don't worry about filling the card, I just shoot and review at home.

As for resolution: on my DSLR, I keep images at full res, because it captures so much detail. On my pocket Sony, I keep it set to 3MP, because I don't think it's capturing twice as much image detail at 6MP. Running it at lower res means faster post-processing, and slightly reduced time between shots during shooting.

Yah, some of the photos are more for mood than technical prowess, and that's a good example of that!

The thing that surprised me, as a big fan of macro, is that I didn't end up using my DSLR (and the dedicated macro lens I have for it) one single time. I ended up with fantastic opportunistic shots with my pocket Sony, which gave pretty decent macros, I think!

I work with an old Sony Cybershot. 2.1MP. 64MB memory stick. I offload a lot to the computer. I still don't have the cash for a DSLR. I still have a couple of old Nikons and Pentaxes. Film makes me angry. I burn up waaaay too much film.

I use a fairly decent Olympus 35mm. It doesn't have changeable lenses though.

I recently took some pics during a Halloween party, but haven't developed yet.

I'd like to get something like a Canon Rebel or similar. It's not in the budget though.

Unless you want a small camera, there's no reason to buy a prosumer non-SLR digital camera any more. It makes no sense, with whole DSLR kits selling for barely over $500, and with the Nikon D40 expected any time now, which should be cheaper than any DSLR to date.

Just to prove that I can stay on topic, something I noticed was that "Mom" is featured, as are "Dad and Stepmom," but not together. How did that work out, and are we missing a "complete family" picture, or did you not get a chance to take one?

My parents are divorced, and in 1991 my mom remarried to a Swiss guy, so we all moved over there in 1992. In 1999 I came back here to go to school, they stayed there.

I was in Switzerland again in September visiting my friends in Basel. I love it there...great country.

I loved seeing the pics Tooki as I did not get to Zurich this time except to catch my flight home (which also meant no stop at the Teuscher store - their champagne truffles are the best!)

Yeah, as a linguist, I maintain that Swiss German meets all the basic requirements for being considered a separate language.

But yes, I speak fluent Schwyzertüütsch. I am also fluent in standard German, but with a blatantly Swiss accent.

Yep. The biggest hurdle right now is that I need to get a freshly-issued copy of my birth certificate from the country where I was born, which is Guatemala. Getting third-world bureaucracies to do things is... challenging!
