Foxconn is going to reveal a new mobile device alongside Mozilla on Monday, one that will apparently run on
Firefox OS. While the event on June 3rd before
Computex will showcase a new device of some description, neither Foxconn nor Mozilla have hinted at what it could be, but rumblings suggest it could end up being a tablet instead of a smartphone running the new mobile operating system.
An "industry insider" speaking
to Focus Taiwan said it would "likely be a tablet," though this has not been confirmed elsewhere as of yet. Considering
yesterday's report that Foxconn may be moving into selling its own accessories in order to expand its business from manufacturing devices for other companies, a move to launch its own smartphone or tablet may be a wise move for the company.
Firefox OS is aimed at providing manufacturers and carriers an open and low-cost operating system aimed at developing markets. Primarily using apps created with HTML5, developer devices from
Geeksphone of Spain have started shipping, whie other manufacturers including LG, ZTE, and
Alcatel have signed up to work on making devices specifically for the software.
