We have an older imac
(imac 800mhz PowerPC G4, 512 MB RAM,
OS X version 10.2.8)
It's quiet and very nice looking but has always been frustratingly slow (if that stupid spinning ball had bearings they would have worn out years ago).
This machine is long overdue for a replacement so I started long at the Mac Mini. Was wondering if anyone knows if the mini could be hooked up the the imac to use it's monitor?

No. The video port on the iMac is *in* only. I suppose some creative hardware hacking might make it possible, but displays are pretty cheap.
Why a mini instead of an iMac?

thats not entirely true. theres a shareware app now available that allows you to use any imac screen as a screen for another computer, forgot the name though...maybe somebody could chime in with some help.

The shareware is ScreenRecycler and costs $25.

But beware it's a VNC-based solution, so the screen sharing will not be fast enough to play games. And its performance will depend a lot on your network (Gigabit is fine, 802.11g is crap).
Personally, on a tight budget I'd rather go for a new low-end iMac or a Mac mini plus super cheap Dell display.

I think you mean the "video port on the iMac is *out* only."

Thanks for the advice.
I'm sure that software won't work on Os x 10.2. Nothing else does anymore.

Yeah, it requires 10.4 or later. Although I guess you should be able to get a Tiger license really cheap through eBay or CL now.
