Will you be an early adopter or wait it out for a while?

I'll buy it as soon as it is available.

Just like every other OS X upgrade.

I have to call the Apple Store and ask what type of shipping I need in order to get it by Friday the 24th. If it's not the free shipping I'll just go to a store on Saturday or Sunday.

OK, I just had an evil thought on how to get the cheap upgrade from Apple.

On this page: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...mber=M9231LL/A

It asks you to put in the model of machine you have, the serial number and when you bought it. Since most of us have machines that don't quality for the $20 upgrade, you can just go to CompUSA and write down the serial number of a machine that hasn't been sold yet. Fill in that serial number and order your cheap copy of Panther.

Damn, that is evil...

I want the upgrade, but I'm not willing to sink that low... Plus when the person the buys the system sends it in... they are going to be on to you... I'm sure they aren't going to come after you, but at the same time...

I'm wondering who the people are that aren't going to upgrade "any time soon" as in the poll. Are they crazy or just tight on cash...

You get a faster system, tons of eye candy and free upgrades for the next 18 months, iChatAV, etc. etc.

I'm considering Panther Server!

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Wow, almost 80% are early-adopters. Hope it makes my TiBook 400 last another 6 months for me.

You might as well just copy the CD from someone else at that point since you're not legit anyway.

Of course on this board, everyone is going to dive in right away. I'm going to be waiting a bit to see if I can get it for free through my school (they've had site licenses for 10.1 and 10.2) and if not I'll probably buy the student version.

It's too bad the family pack is for people living in the same household... I bet if they gave volume discounts they would sell like hotcakes.

what about the option "I will pirate it"?

(Not that I will, I have preordered it. But it would make the whole poll more "down to earth".)

I was going to just go buy it at the Apple event at the Clarendon VA Apple store, but decided to simply order it online. I'm guessing I'll have it earlier in the afternoon and have the extra time to install a new HD and RAM.

Now that I did buy it online, it's not going to show up until the middle of November!!!

I thought about ordering it from maczone and not have to worry about tax and driving.

Then I thought, I guess I will go to the hour long CompUSA party and buy it there... Hey, I might get something for free that way.

FWIW: I've been keeping a copy of Panther in my Amazon shopping cart (watching for the ole $50 rebate ).
So I click on it occasionally and I notice that its sales ranking among Amz software went from #123 on Oct 10 to #32 ! on Oct 13.
Bunch of folks are looking to get it with free shipping, I guess!

About the rebate... closest Amz has come so far is a *discounted price*: $129.00. "Save 99" they exclaim.

Over at the Duke University Mecical Centers Panther is in great need. They have just implemented new security requirments to be taken by all labs, and Panther has many of the new requirements built in. (Remote Administration, File Vault, Password from sleep, improved software update, etc.) They will also need the speed of Panther as probably 30% of their macs are older iMacs. Us guys cant wait to start installing Panther!

...apparently this "trick" may not work (and no, i did not try....)...from what i read elsewhere, the up-to-date online order won't work unless the hardware has been *registered* with apple by the purchaser.

and to answer the poll....i am an early adopter...pre-order for me!

It depends... Normally i'll buy it if I know that there aran't major problems. If there are then I'll wait for 10.3.1 . And if I don't have the money I pirate it.

I'll be buying Panther the moment the Apple Store in Soho has 'em. This release sounds almost too good to be true - 20-30% speed gains?! Yeah baby, I'm there.
