I have a wave file that I would like to add as a system sound file. What would be the recommended format to save the file as?

save it as a system 7 sound file and you'll be able to drop it into the system suitcase.

Yep, r j's right.
Just use SoundApp (it's great and it's free) and save as a system sound.
