A camera add-on for mobile devices has opened to pre-orders, one which adds thermal imaging abilities to smartphones. The Seek Thermal Camera uses a 206x156-resolution sensor capable of detecting heat in the range of -40 Celsius to 330 Celsius, with the user able to switch between a normal image feed and a thermal version with a quick swipe.

Weighing half an ounce and housed in a magnesium casing with a custom chalcogenide lens, the Seek is available in both Lightning and microUSB versions for iOS and Android devices respectively. While it offers a narrow 36-degree field of view, it does have the ability to record video and take still images of the thermal feed, with nine color palettes available for the temperature range.

The device appears to replicate a number of features offered in the FLIR thermal camera case, though it is slightly cheaper and takes the form of an add-on rather than a case replacement, but it has similar set of usability reasons. It can be used to identify the positions of animals or people in the dark, show where studs and wires are in a wall before performing any construction tasks, and can help keep tabs on the temperature of food being cooked.

The Seek Thermal Camera is going on sale today with shipments due this fall, priced at $199.

Centigrade? How quaint. That term was made obsolete in 1948 when the Comité international des poids et measures (CIPM) replaced it with degrees Celsius.
