LG Electronics announced this week that it would be bringing it first curved LED computer monitor to the United States this week. The LG Curved UltraWide Monitor (34UC97) offers an LED backlight, in-plane switching (IPS) screen with a 21:9 aspect ratio. LG says that the 34UC97 is built as a desktop replacement for dual monitor set-ups.

"Many people spend more time in front of computer monitors than they do in front of TVs, and yet the industry hasn't delivered the same level of innovation when it comes to monitors," said Head of New Product Development Tim Alessi. "At LG, innovation in display technologies isn't just limited to our cutting-edge TV products, which is why we are expanding our US monitor lineup with our 21:9 Curved UltraWide model."

LG places the 34UC97 in the 34-inch class of displays, even though it measures 32.7 inches diagonally. Incorporated into the monitor is what LG calls "true color finder" software for color calibration. LG says that this helps provide accuracy in colors from the source material, something that is important for graphic designers, movie composition and editing, and photography. No mention is made how it stacks up against hardware calibration methods.

A neat feature that the 34UC97 adds is the ability to divvy up the screen real estate. The UltraWide monitor contains LG's 4-Screen Split feature, which allows the display to be cut up into four sections in one of eight screen ratios. The feature allows users to prioritize windows by size, doing so with only a few mouse clicks.

The monitor can be used as a display solution for both PCs and Macs, as it supports Thunderbolt 2 on top of having two HDMI ports and a DisplayPort. The 34UC97 provides a sound option as well, with its internal seven-watt stereo speaker powered by Maxxaudio. It also supports multiple displays chained together, and connections for two sources with a dual-link feature.

Pricing for the 34UC97 is set at $1,300 at online retailers like Amazon and Newegg.

The 32.7" diagonal (34" class) presumably comes from allowing for the curvature. 32.7" direct diagonal becomes ~33.1" following the screen surface, rounded upwards of course. It certainly doesn't come from screen under the bezel - it appears to have almost no bezel.
