I am not that big of a meat eater to start with ... definitely not sure I want to eat cloned meats!

US body backs sale of cloned food

A series of studies have said cloned meat is safe to eat
Meat and milk from cloned animals is safe for human consumption, the US food regulator said in a draft ruling.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ruled that cloned cattle, pigs and goats produced food "as safe as the food we eat every day".

The recommendation, coming after a five-year study, is a major step towards allowing food from animals onto US supermarket shelves.

A public consultation period will take place before final approval is given.

Opponents say a majority of US consumers are against animal cloning.

And the majority of US consumers can't figure out how to program the time into their VCR. So maybe not the best pool for finding intelligent viewpoints.

I'd be really curious at how duplicate DNA would be bad for you. Presumably, someone else ate the real thing and would be ok.

And real problems would stem from a bad choice to clone.

I guess for me it is the whole 'ickyness' factor.

Like I said, I am not a big meat eater to begin with so the mere thought of having more meat 'grown' to be harvested is ... a little ... sick to start with.

But I don't want this to turn into a vegetarian vs. meat-eater discussion.

Even though it is cloned, is it EXACTLY like the original? I know twins are supposed to be exact duplicates of each other, but that is not exactly true either. They have natural variations.

Also, just think ... pork is not exactly 'big-free' ... what happens when those worms (parasites) get cloned and perhaps evolve/devolve in the process.

I see this opening up a can of worms (pun intended).

I'm not sure I necessarily see anything wrong with eating cloned meat. However, I question the wisdom of intentionally limiting the gene pool this way.

The question is, are they going to be cloning entire animals, or just using cloned cells to grow meat.

If they're cloning the whole animal, then I don't really see the point. It will take up even more resources than traditionally raised animals and won't provide any benefits. If they're just growing steaks, cool! I'll definitely give it a try, but it also definitely won't taste the same as the meat never got exercise or good feeds. I'm sure that eventually they'll be able to overcome that, but at first it will most likely taste completely different. Might be better though, who knows.

They're going to be cloning the best breeders (entire animal). Then they fill the farms with these cloned breeders and you eat their naturally-conceived kids. That's how I understand it anyways.

A bit like cloning me (complete with inherent awesomeness) and sending the copies around to every Jessicas' house. Except if you ate any of my clones' kids my clones would kick your ass.

Cloning animals costs a fortune. It's very non cost-effective.

The only problem I can see down the line is if they're cloning for breeding purposes, then we're shrinking the gene pool. If we start breeding animals for food that are living lives with deformities because of pseudo inbreeding, then I have a problem with it.

But then I don't understand a whole lot about that side of it, maybe it wouldn't be a problem.

That makes zero sense. Wouldn't the offspring of the best breeders also be good breeders? And if not, then the goodness of breeding is probably not genetic so the clone wouldn't have it either.

The risks of cloning have nothing to do with the gene pool, it's because cloning is an imperfect tool to say the least, and the majority of clones animals have major birth defects and developmental problems. These are not due to the DNA being wrong, they're due to the fact that you ripped the nucleus out of one cell and stuck it in another (there's more to life than DNA). I still don't see any benefit to doing this for food (unless they mean genetically altered animals, like seedless watermelons, but I doubt they do).

Well, that's what they intend to do. I never said it made sense. I mean, if you want something that makes sense then it'd be don't clone, breed. The whole cloning thing doesn't make any sense at all to me, unless we're talking Jessicas.
