There are way too many experiencing the popping sound for it to be anything but something connected directly or caused by the 10.4.10 update.
No haxies involved. This is Apple's fault.

I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

After update 10.4.10 system stop recognize microphone on my Logitech webcam. and also separate microphon connected to line-in input.
This is only on MacPro 2.66. My old G5 1.8 DP - works fine.

Yes it seems only Intel Mac users get a pie in the face with the 10.4.10 update. PPC users can be pleased.
Silly Apple.

I'm not getting the popping, I have a Core Duo MacBook (not Pro), is this only affecting current hardware?

Same problem here: No audio from my USB webcam (Logitech Ultra Vision) after 10.4.10 Combo. I submitted a bug report to Apple, and they confirmed it as a known issue. I've confirmed the issue exists across four different machines, and have been seeing an increasing number of posts regarding this. And no, sadly, Audio MIDI Setup doesn't fix it, as the system doesn't even recognize that the webcam has a mic. :-(

Hmm, I can't test this as I don't have an external mic.. but it wouldn't surprise me one bit that this is something that slipped past Apple "QA".
