I have heard that there is free GSM cellphone service in there. The question is, can they support 3G data service too?

"I'm an anarchist except when I need my 3G data service".

Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.

Have you read the rules? Normal, everyday life has less rules than that.

I've been a couple times. It's too damn expensive these days. Not to mention that school started last week. The professors do not appreciate it when you miss two out of the first three weeks of class.

I like my water with hops, malt, hops, yeast, and hops.

Yeah, I thought all that was sorta... you know... against the whole idea of burning man. WTF?

Communal living, no trash receptacles, no buying/selling of any goods or services*, no showers or bathing, no power (unless you bring your own), in middle of the desert surrounded by a fence with one entrance/exit.
After reading their web page, it sounds like a communist/socialist/hippie society housed in a concentration camp**.
*they do sell ice and coffee - nothing more
**multiple law enforcement agencies have both uniformed and plainclothes officers patrolling the grounds
To each his/her own but that does NOT sound like a cool, free-spirited "adventure".
I would agree that when it first started on a beach in CA that it truly was a cool, free-spirited adventure. Now, it's just a destination for people to play hippie for a week.

The problem was that the freespiritedness was screwing with things. Injuries, overdoses, prostitution and litter became problems big enough to threaten a clampdown and an end to the burning man.
So they self policed. But yeah, BM is whatever these days.

OP mentions GSM service. From what I've read, it was just some guys testing openBTS via a sat link. OpenBTS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
GNU Radio - OpenBTS - gnuradio.org
I can't find anything on the surface that mentions 3G. Not surprising if they don't support it since GSM 3G is WCDMA, which is completely different from GSM (TDMA).
Since IP is the backhaul for openbts, it'd be trivial to set up wifi for data, but that obviously sucks bandwidth from your bts-to-voip gateway backhaul.
