Is there a way to rip out the mpeg file from a VCD? I checked out a handful of utilities, but none seemed to be able to do it. And I can't just copy the file out...

When you copied the .dat file from the vcd, did you rename it .mpg? I've done this on windows machines, and wmp will play the mpg (in fact it will play the .dat directly if you right click and select open with...).

The .dat file is really an mpeg-1 video. Change the extension to .mpg and QuickTime should play it. TO put it on a DVD, you'll need to convert it to a better format (mpeg-2). Mpeg-1 vcd's are tricky because the audio and video are multiplexed ("muxed") into one track. A program like bbDEMUX can separate the streams into mpeg-1 audio and mpeg-1 video for real use. I'd like to know of a better program that can convert muxed mpeg-1 to something else...I do it the long way. Demux, "convert" the audio to aiff with WireTap, then put everything together in Final Cut. Bleh.

1. Demux mpeg-1 with FFMPEGX which gives you a .m1v file and .mp2 file

2. Then encode the .mp2 file to 48000khz either in .mp2 or .ac3 with FFMPEGX

3. Then use DVD STUDIO PRO to bring the .m1v file and your new audio file.

4. Build your DVD and ready to go.
