Passing through town next week enroute to Asia/Australia. The PBG4 is out the question, and may want to pick up a Pismo (400 or better yet 500). Where would be best to look...who would most likely to have most stock? Inshop warranty etc etc.

Thanks in advance.

I'd try J&R Music/Computer World, they have had a good relationship with Apple for many, many years and are a very large reseller. While you're there you can also browse the latest and greatest electronic anything.

just my 2 cents...

why not take that 15 minute commute and cross over to jersey and buy the apple stuff from a CompUSA or Sears store in jersey. The sales taxes are lower (6% compared to 8.15%) unless of course you can strike a deal with a NY store so you do not have to pay a sales tax.

If you'd rather stay in NY, you can check out tekserve (155 West 23rd Street 4th Floor, New York, NY 10011 (212) 929-3645) and B&H Photo, besides J&R.

CompUSA on 5th (Ave.) and +-34th revamped their whole Mac display a few weeks ago. It looks very nice! They have several iMacs, two of which with DV camera and iMovie, several 15" LCDs, a few Cubes, PowerMacs and the regular portables. Plus their Apple sales specialists (Red shirt with white Apple Logo) are true Mac-heads.

There's another large computer store across 5th, one block up, which has a good Mac selection also. That's where I saw my first ACD. They also have a good selection of Wintel subnotebooks, just to show you where Apple is missing the boat.

BTW: J&R is on Park Row, across the street from City Hall. Check www.jandr.com for directions.

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

They're certainly the best for repairs, especially on PowerBooks, including the fickle 2400.

I don't remember seeing many machines up for demo when I brought my PowerBook for hinge and other repairs. But that was two years ago and the boxes are probably just in the back. Check www.tekserve.com for exact address and a phone number to check on stock.

Tekserve, for sure. They know more about Macs than anyone should know, and they won't bs you.

They're on 23rd between Sixth and Seventh, closer to Seventh, on the north side of the street. Don't know the number off the top of my head - check the book.

Stay away from J&R. They're heavy on the salespeople and light on the knowledge.

Or just buy mail-order. I just posted my mail-order shopping tips in the 'cancelled order' topic, you might want to take a look.

tekserve is where it's at. pricewise they can't beat the catalogs, but if you ever have a problem their knowledge and helpfulness trumps all others. http://www.tekserve.com/

I've had good luck with Datavision on 5th Ave in midtown (a block or two north of the 5th Ave CompUSA). J&R down near City Hall has also been good.

Yes Tekserve has knowledgeable techs but don't expect them to get your Mac back from them very promptly. I regularly have 9-12 day wait times for the simplest of fixes (keyboard replacement, for example).

And, Tekserve is carry-in only; they don't do any onsite work. Do you really want to haul your G4 across town. In the subway? You want to pay for a cab?

Tekserve *does* have a large inventory of Mac products and accessories. It's a great place to browse, just not as speedy as I'd like on repairs.

I have 3 days in NY, may browse Tekserve, B&H and may even go down to Jersey. If I don't find a pismo500, I will order a 400 from Outpost. Tight schedule, but it is still to hard to get rid of the pbg4 idea. Thank you all. Mailorder is going to be a hassle with the billing address not being shipping address blah blah blah

Oink,

Whenever I order from Outpost, I've never had a problem with using an alternate ship-to address. I ship everything to myself at work, and they've never blinked. Of course, my alternate ship-to is in the same city as my home, and my bill-to address isn't an international address, which it sounds like yours might be.

I'd say that you should place your order as early in the morning as possible, and be sure to give them a phone number where you can easily be reached that day. (Maybe a cell phone number?) That way, they've got plenty of time to contact you and verify the order.

Good Luck!
