For the longest time I couldn't ever post in the MacNN forums at work because of it being blocked but for some reason I magically can now. I always thought it was weird because I could always post on the MetClub(Metallica) forums and Lambopower forum but not a computer forum. Just thought I would share and ad a poll.

My work does have a content filter, but if I connect via wireless the filter is bypassed. They block DropBox and a few other odd sites, but places like YouTube and Facebook are unblocked by the filter. I always connect via wireless so that I can see my Dropbox-hosted images.

Aren't you worried about getting fired/disciplined for spending company time on MacNN?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

That's not a realistic issue for most people nowadays. A certain amount of surfing is tolerated by most companies.

Prediction: People who can't post at work will have trouble responding to this until they get home.

I can’t. It’s blocked. Our IT department block sites manually (as well as using an automated filter, of course), and MacNN was blocked after I was on it for about half an hour during an extremely quiet and extremely boring night shift. Next day, blocked. Bastards.

Of course, if I bring my own laptop to work and connect to one of the wireless networks available (silly families around the area who don’t know what encryption is), then I can. But I normally only do that at night.

My boss spends more time surfing the web than I do.

I come in here between builds which can be short (30 seconds..scan headers), or full-blown builds which can be upwards of 20 mins.

I can't, you know, write code while it's building.

yep. Macnn is no problem. youtube, vimeo, and hulu are blocked, as are photobucket, imageshack, etc, and anything that seems like a game. I was able to lobby for flickr access since we were trying to use it for a work solution. I think facebook has the same workaround.

Not only can I post to Macnn while at work, but my organization has direct links to facebook, twitter, youtube and flickr posted on our homepage. If that's not an endorsement to screw around on the web, I don't know what is.

To answer the original post, I work from home too.

What I'm wondering though is if you guys think that these sort of blocks actually improve worker productivity? Do you think there is a relationship between autonomy and productivity?

Well, it seems to me that if a worker is spending a half-hour on MacNN, he/she isn't getting any work done...

That's absurd unless you have a very short workday. It should leave several hours to get plenty of work done.

No one is productive for the entire eight hours of their day.

True, but on the flip side if a worker doesn't feel like he/she is trusted enough to do their work without these sorts of monitoring tools, are they going to work as hard?

According to whoever writes ‘best practice’ advice for leaders, people doing office-type jobs should take approximately a ten-minute break every hour, plus at least two longer (20–30 minutes or more) breaks during the day, in order to maintain productivity.

Fill just three of those ten-minute breaks, and your half hour is used up.

Expecting people to be working and productive from they arrive at work till they leave in the afternoon is the single most efficient way of making sure they’re not. Except possibly calling in a fake (or worse: real) bomb alert.

Ah, I'd read the "half hour" as half an hour at a time. That makes more sense.

Rereading the thread, I see the only half hour was my own. :$

That was half an hour in one go, but it was definitely an exception: it was three in the morning, and there was absolutely nothing else to do that night. (I work at a travel insurance emergency call centre, and once you’ve handled all the cases left from the evening, there’s not much work-related to do if the phones don’t ring)

Normally, my web-surfing spells at work would be perhaps two or three minutes at a time.

And as for the original question: yes I can. They trust us here, as long as we don't try to photograph our CEO with an iPhone. Then, bad things happen.

I can, but don't. I can surf to any "appropriate" site during break or lunch. I just choose not to log in at work. If I feel compelled to post, I wait until I get home.

Switch around the times for work and breaks, and that sounds about right for me.

Yessir. I'm a consumer loan officer and some days my pipeline gets thin and there really just isn't anything to do but surf the web until business picks up later in the day. I'm not real sure what I'd do if our company didn't allow unrestricted (forums, Facebook, etc.) surfing. Its the type of job where as long as you do your job and get things done when they need to be done, you have quite a bit of freedom to do whatever you want.

I had completely open Internet access at my last job. However, due to my ability to get horrendously distracted by the Internet during the day, I installed the K-9 filter from BlueCoat, had the boyfriend set the password, and blocked NN (and like forty other sites).

It worked great until I started using RDP to connect to my machine at home to bypass my own filter. *headdesk*

My job before that (first one out of college) used WebSense and heavily filtered the Internet. I could get to MacNN, but there were loads of sites that were blocked.

WRT the discussion about whether or not blocking at work is a good thing: it's just as much about liability as it is about productivity, in many cases. No business wants to deal with an employee illegally downloading software or viewing underage porn, for instance, while using their work connection. I didn't really have a problem with it. I mean, it was annoying as hell, but it's not like it blocked access to things I *needed* to have access to.
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

Yes, but I never have time. When I'm at the computer I'm doing documentation, otherwise I'm "working" and away from the computer. At lunch, I suppose I could, but then I'm usually fooling around with my iPhone so I'd probably post from that anyway.
