The new "book" features in iPhoto v5 are just awesome compared to it's predecessor! Everything from the options in actual style of the book, templates, editing, pricing...you name it, it's better. I just packed 40+ pictures into a "Medium softcover" book and it cost me $15.62 (including shipping) total. Not bad at all if you ask me. I'll report back once I actually get the book to report how the quality is.

Who else plans to take advantage of the new book features in iPhoto v5? I never did before as I didn't like the price, or the various options I could choose. Apple did very well in making this service so much better in my opinion!

I'm going to be taking part in that... make sure to report back on the quality. That's an issue I've been having with my local camera shop. The photos look like crap.

I'm going to take part in this too. I'm happy they lowered the price. I think that was one of the reasons why I didn't take part the first time.

Do you need iPhoto5 to take advantage of the new pricing? I haven't updated yet. I would think it would be the same for 4 and 5, but I'm not home right now and can't try it out.

How long did printing take? Mine have been printing for a week and a half. Must have run out of ink.

The service looks great, as soon as I get my copy of iLife I might have to see about buying a few books. Could this be Apple's version of the iTMS for photos? Seems to make sense... unless Apple got into the porn industry.

I ordered a 76 page hard cover book (large) that threw me back $85.

It was fun to build but after I put in the order I received this message:

__________

Dear Customer,

Thank you for your recent iPhoto book order.

Apple could not process your order because the book file contained images
that were corrupted or otherwise unprintable. Since we cannot modify the
content of books after they are submitted, your order is no longer active,
and you have not been charged.

Please preview the book file using one of these two methods:

HOW TO PREVIEW A BOOK FILE IN iPHOTO: Open iPhoto and click to select the
album you want to order as a book. In the lower portion of the iPhoto
window, click Book, and then click Preview. In the upper left corner of the
preview window, click the arrows to see each page of the book. Look for any
truncated text or other unexpected issues. Close the preview window when you
are done.

HOW TO SAVE A BOOK FILE AS A PORTABLE DOCUMENT FORMAT (PDF) FILE: Open
iPhoto and click to select the album you want to order as a book. In the
lower portion of the iPhoto window, click Book. From the File menu, select
Print. In the Print dialog box, click Save As PDF. Choose a name for the
file and a folder in which to save the file, then click Save. Then go the
Finder, open that folder, and double-click on the file. The Preview
application will open and display your book. Use the Page Down and Page Up
keys on your keyboard to see each page of the book. Look for any truncated
text or other unexpected issues.

Sincerely,

The iPhoto Team

Something got corrupted that I have yet to find- I may have to rebuild the entire book!

Which brings me to my next issue- how to you export a book to a different computer?

Hi,
Select the album and click on the burn button. Interestingly, it will copy the album, it's music, and retain the book format.
Good luck!

Are these new spec iPhoto 5 books available to order outside America?

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Silly me listened to Steve at the Keynote when he said "I'm pleased to announce these books will be available worldwide - day one".

Went out and bought iLife '05 to use the books, only to find that Australia apparently isn't included in 'world wide'.

I made a book last year, and found the print quality to be subpar (but I am admittedly very picky). I realize this is subjective, but I'd love to hear people's thoughts on the print quality of iPhoto 5 books, and if you think it's improved over iPhoto 1-4.

I just did the standard book, which I think was 22 photos, all told. They are tiny. Really about the size of a credit card. The print quality is OK, considering you're not supposed to be studying them or anything.

I'm figuring these will be nice stocking stuffers next Xmas.

I hate that sticker they put on the cover. It's so cheap and cheesy. But the quality of the actual pages inside the book were pleasing to me.

I'm also curious about the quality of the new stuff... especially the cover quality.

Hrmm, can anyone take a few pictures of their printed iphoto book? I'm having a very hard imagining what it looks like (the photos on the apple website don't help... and neither do the photos from the keynote speech).

All European prints are handled at the same place (by Kodak btw.).

I just got my small photo books and I'm asking for my money back. My large hardcover book that I ordered the week before looks amazing and I was very impressed with the quality of the pictures. The pictures from the small photo book are printed differently however and it shows. Any image that has small details such as a group picture blurs and softens the image so much that the faces are barely distinguishable and it's hard to tell who's who. You can see the individual dots that make up the picture. I made a 20x30 poster like this one from many of the same images that I used in the small book and on the poster they look nice and sharp. There was a very large thread on the Apple discussion boards about the poor quality of medium and small books but the thread has since been pulled. The main point on the thread was that unless people start asking for refunds, other poor bastards will end up with craptacular looking medium and small photo books. I know that I won't be ordering a medium or small book until I hear that ophoto has changed the way they print these books.

Apple doesn't read these message boards. If you have a complaint or suggestion for OS X send feedback where it will do some good.
