Forgive me if this was meant in the peripherals section or not, but I thought this may be in relation to my Powerbook.

I currently have a combo drive on my 15" PowerBook (1.5ghz), and I would like to upgrade to a superdrive. I've looked around the forums and eBay, and I guess I came across the Panasonic UJ-845 drive, which looks like it's also a Matshita brand. I see the price of this drive online at about $120-150 and I was thinking about getting it. I'm also wondering if maybe the Apple stores sell superdrives by themselves too.

Also, does anyone know if they can install it at the store as well (if they do sell the drives at the stores?) and how much they cost?

Thanks!

The Apple stores don't do upgrades, and Apple doesn't sell upgrade parts besides RAM.

if you can get the drive, use the blow sites as a referance, you can replace the drive your self, just buy the proper tools, in the guide they tell you what tools you will need, and they also have step by step instructions with pictures.. good luck man, the only concern that you should address is if you do it your self if you can keep your apple care if you have it, if you dont have apple care, then do it your self, and just be careful as your doing it.

Why upgrade your combo drive? Get an external DVD burner for $179.00

http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10469

It's 16x Dual Layer.
You don't have to void your warranty, or dig into your computer.

Just a thought.

extrenal might not be an option, such as my position, everything needs to be inside the laptop.. but if external is an option, i would definatly reccomend the external, cheeper, and easier, and faster...

Yikes... well, unfortunately, I don't have the guts to open up my Powerbook and attempt to see if I can install something like that or not.

An external drive is not a bad option. I don't mind it, actually. I was just hoping getting a superdrive update so that no extra stuff would go in my backpack anymore. So maybe I'll just buy an NEC Dual-Layer DVD Drive for $40 on Newegg, and buy an external case for it, and that should round me off no more than $90 for everything.

You can also find a local Apple Specialist who could do the upgrade for you.
