They make Xpress DV for PC, but not for Mac. How much sense does that make? You need to purchase a 1394 card for the PC, but they won't make the software for Mac, which has native 1394 DV i/o support. Instead, for Mac, you'd have to get the regular version of Xpress with its Avid i/o PCI cards and whatnot. Weird stuff.

I agree. We have quite the Film/Video Dept. at my college, and all the directors and editors use FCP instead of the "crappy" Avid Express machines.

Now when it comes to the Avid 9000 or Quantel box...THATS's a different story

Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want.

iBook 500/ 320 RAM/ 10GB HD/ Airport (coolest. laptop. ever.)

QuickSilver G4 867/ 640 RAM/ 60GB HD/ GeForce 3/ SuperDrive/ Airport/ SoundSticks/ 15" Apple Studio Display

Toshiba Satellite - 900Mhz PIII/ 256 RAM/ 20GB HD/ GeForce2 Go 16MB DDR/ DVD/ Win2k

Waa, that stinks. I really liked Avid Xpress. I never got to use FCP in college. That stinks too.

I have my Xpress DV demo disc sitting right here too... and no good machine to run it on...

Avid's just a weird company. And anyone who thinks FCP is going to de-throne Avid as the king of video editing is a complete and utter moron. FCP is software-only!

Not anymore it ain't. You can even get a hardware/software bundle with FCP2 and Matrox RTMac card + Countour designs ShuttlePro right there from the Apple Store.

Granted not everything is Real Time YET...it's getting there. And surely it's an established fact that FCP has the superior interface.

So you think FCP 2 with the Matrox RTMac card can compare to a $150,000 Avid Symphony suite?

How about you start looking up something called price/performance ratio? Of course a specialized $150,000 ANYTHING would be better than the $2500+ alternative that can do the job just fine, albeit slower.

I'm almost going with the rolleyes here, but I won't.
