Man is it me or is the management of this place turning ghetto? At this rate, looks like MacNN could follow AppleInsider's downward spiral.

You were obviously never a member of Apple Insider.

Who cares what platform it runs on? As long as it is fast and stays up constantly. When Apple Insider switched from a x86 Linux box to a Cube, people were not exactly congratulating the managemnent on their wise decision. (Perl under OS X had/has a terrible memory leak which made Maraiah Carey look like a bastion of stability)

Ca$h, I don't know what is up with you, but I find that this reincarnation of our server is much faster than the state it was in a few hours ago.
Sure, it's unstable, but if every time it goes down for a few hours performance increases, take it down for another few days!

The server -- which is in Boston, by the way -- is a wildly overloaded PII 350 (for the amount of traffic we get -- around 2 million page views a month -- Infopop recommends a PIII 900 or better). A new server is in the works, but a mangled installation of Red Hat has prevented it from being put into use.
As for yesterday's problems, it turns out that a program (which we forum admins still haven't been able to identify), which had been stealthily launched so as to leave no tracks, was eating all the CPU time, thus causing the speed problems. The server administrators have been alerted about it.

Hey tooki, why don't you go to CompUSA, get a marked-down Pentium III 900 and 768 or so megs of RAM, install Red Hat, send it to MacNN, and have them reimburse you? All of that would probably only take a few days, couple of weeks at the longest, as opposed to the months of saying "The new server is in [random part of the United States]. We'll have it operating soon."

...Then Monish would get the server, look at it, and just let it sit there, while he does nothing.
Kinda sounds like what's happening now.

You can use mine, just add bandwith.
32K/sec upload isn't too good, but 900MHz with a gig of ram is.

P.S. We discovered the source of the rogue program (whose function remains unknown): the forum server got hacked into. Now that the security is patched up again, it should be ok...
and while we were at it, we did a few changes to the configuration to see if we can tweak any more performance from this machine until we get a new one running.

Does this 'rogue program' have a name? Can you tell me how much RAM the program occupied?
Maybe it was a distributed-computing client application that was supposed to be using CPU idle-time. Who configured that server? That's where I'd look.

(First and foremost Ca$h, I'm not insulting you with this post.)
When I read that, I suddenly burst out laughing for some bizarre reason. Just get a bottle of jack daniels right next to the computer you use the most, and post away. I'll die laughing.
Thanks man.
