Hi - I've been lurking around the forum for a couple of weeks now, and you have all been incredibly helpful in my decsion to get an iBook. I'm actually going to get it after work today, yay! So, anyways, my question is this: if I am not going to get the Base Station at this point, is it worthwhile to get the Airport card? Where can I use it? I've heard that it can be used in places like Starbucks, but where else? Just trying to decide if I should get it now, or wait until I can afford the Base Station as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well, if you can afford the card, why not check out some other cheaper base stations. Browse around this forum and you'll find a lot of suggestions. I think the Netgear MR814 for 50 bucks from buy.com is the one to watch. It'd be tuff to beat that deal.

I concur with aaanorton! Apple's product is pretty, but it's very expensive compared to what else is out there. You can spend a whole lot less, and get a lot more equipment capability in the box, including a wired switch with several ports. All you need to make sure of is that whatever you get is 802.11b or WiFi compatible. 802.11b is the IEEE standard for this kind of wireless networking, and WiFi is a trademark certification that indicates full compliance with that standard.

There are alot of other places besides Starbucks that have 'Hot Spots'. Wireless surfing is getting more and more popular in most countries.
