This was previously reported on MacNN, but they decided to allow the public to purchase these.

****ing a. I was going to go and get one but the exposure online is getting out of hand. People are going to camp out??? It's a 4 year old abused iBook! I only wanted one for my little sister who has no computer, but I'm not going to deal with the insanity involved anymore.

Why would the school do this? It seems really stupid. They could hire someone to put them up on ebay and give them a 10% commision. They would probably make 4 times as much money with less work.

My guess is that they probably had their fair share with logic board problems.

Actually of the 23,000 they bought they're only selling 1,000. The middle schools are going to stay Apple while the high schools are going Dell. Also, all the graduating seniors from last year were given first priority to buy an iBook if they wanted.

Besides, this is a quick way for the school system to make $50k and they'll probably only need a handful of people there to do it. Why pay someone 10% when you can get volunteers from the school to do it for free?

You know what? I'll take one and since my nephew is poor, he'll appreciate it. So if anyone wants to do a good deed, and you live nearby, then pick one up, I'll give you $100.00 for it.

It's a computer and an Apple at that. Right now he has nothing... sooo....

Do any of you actually think a stranger is going drive to this school, stand in line for hours and then buy you a laptop? This is a one per customer situation so even if they lived close by and have the opportunity to purchase an iBook they won't be able to walk away with one for themselves. And yes, they could bring a friend or a child or someone else but then that person is also waiting in line and forgoing the opportunity to purchase one for their use.
And in compensation for their valuable time and sacrifice the most anyone has offered them is fifty bucks when you'd be saving at least $300?

Pff, good luck.

+airport card

Point is, Fulcum Pilot is right in that these are unreliable computers. Not only are they old, but they also suffer from logic board failures.

I know some people that know some people that fix Apples. There will be no problem, I'll have a friend who's a genius look at it and make sure there are no problems and upgrade anything I need at a special price. Also, if it does fail, it will be taken care of.

FulcrumPilot was being a jerk, and he was out of line, and that's all.

If the logic board hasn't failed in all this time, it probably will not.

Point is, no one is going to do it for you.

Because you could make $200,000 selling them on ebay? It's a no brainer. One person could spend a couple of months putting them on ebay for a buy it now price of $200, give the school $175 and keep $25. The school makes $175,000 and some lucky guy makes $25,000 for 2 months of work. Everyone wins.

Because it is a school district in which 50k is no different than 200k.
