I'm going to have an apple authorized dealer upgrade my drive. Where can I purchase a harddrive for my MacBook Pro online? I'm looking for something along the lines of 250 GB and 7200 RPMs. Do some harddrives make less noise than others?

The largest 7200RPM laptop drive is 200GB... I'd take the Hitachi or the Seagate.
At 5400RPM you can get 320GB for less money; same manufacturer recommendations.

Is there any performance difference between 5400 and 7200 RPM for the casual user?

What about Western Digital? Is that a superior brand over Hitachi and Seagate? What brand would make the least noise?

It depends what you do; probably, but it may not matter to you.

I'm not a fan of WD aside from their Raptor series.

Forget 320 GB drives. You can already buy 500 GB 5400 rpm drives from Samsung. It's a 9.5 mm drive so it will fit all MB(P)s.

Samsung Spinpoint HM500LI (link in French)

At 65 MB/s (link in French) it pretty much slaughters the WD 250 GB.

56% more capacity for 119% more money isn't a terribly good deal, particularly since the OP only needs 250GB.

I thought if you upgraded the hard drive on the MBP then it voided your warranty? Does having an Apple Authorized Dealer upgrade it for you not void the warranty? :o

5400 vs 7200 is only apparent when the drive is not nearing capacity, so if you are going put 160GB of data on your drive then I would go with the larger 5400 rpm drive.

Citation: MacBook Pro - various drives compared
17" MBP C2D 2.33/3 GB RAM/500 GB 7200 rpm/Glossy Display|-|
17" iMac CD|-|15" PB G4 1.25 GHz|-|iBook g4 1Ghz|-|Pismo

Yep. If you're buying a 200 or 250 GB 7200 rpm drive and you plan on filling it, you'd be much better off with a 500 GB 5400 rpm drive.

And regardless of price, 320 GB max on 5400 rpm drives is history.

Look at MCE drive replacements, up to 500 GB.

Where do you find these 500gb drives?

I just purchased a 320 from Newegg. Of course, UPS lost the shipment on the way to my house. It should have arrived today. No big surprise there.

So.... everyone SAYS to buy a 500gb hdd, but no one can tell me where to find one? I've tried google, found even what I thought was a model number and turned out to be a series number.

Guys please I'd like to lay hands on one, if you know where to get one, let me know. Hell... if I can find enough people interested I can use my business to get wholesale on them if need be.

Bueller?, Bueller?

I already posted a link to a EU reseller above. Since you gave no location info we have no idea where you are. If you're in th US, check this list.

You can get it from Other World Computing and several other Mac vendors. The model number is: HM500LI

Here's a link to a DYI kit, that I plan on getting for my MBP. OWC's Upgrade Bundle

Like I already said: Look at MCE drive replacements, up to 500 GB. Google MCE. OWC is also excellent.

This might be the right place to point out that people looking for a 500 GB 2.5" HDD should watch out. Next to the Samsung Spinpoint M6 there's also the Hitachi Travelstar 5K500. The Hitachi is 12.5 mm thick though so it won't fit your MBP. If you want a 500 GB disk right now, you have to get the 9.5 mm thick Samsung.

Here's an interesting benchmark from barefeats.com (the WD 320 looks good)

500GB SATA notebook drives

Note that at the very end, there's an informal 3rd party report that the Hitachi fits in the MBP. Wonder how tight the fit is?

Looks like I've found my drive. Now I just need the cash. Thank you for pointing to that test...
