So this was my emergecy machine, as my cube was unreliable. Now my cube is gone (smoke and flames...), and I've replaced it with a TiBook. Is it possible to bring this machine up with OSX on it? Ideally I would bring it up with OSX server, but OSX (10.1) I already own and would love to run it. Any chance this would work? How should I go about it? I'm sure the most crucial question would be who made the upgrade card. I've got no idea, it was a gift (used) from a friend. If you know how to find that out, I'd be greatful as well.

You'll be able to install OSX ( and I've done it on an 8500), but the 300mHz is a bit slim. Running it will be a little sluggish (could be the video display that's slow though).

If you have a minimum of 128MB RAM, and possibly a newer videocard (check for compatibility though) you should get fair performance in the GUI. But it won't ever be stellar by any means.

As a server only it should be great (that's what I use my current 7600 for). I have 256MB RAM, a 400mHz G3 and a 47GB U2W drive connected to an Adaptec2940u2w card. I can't boot from the external drives, but the card works fine in OSX and mounts the drive just fine. You'll have to boot from an internal drive connected to the built-in scsi controller (you may get away with the external built-in scsi, but its performance is half the internal interface). The video performance is fair, but not great.

Check out this link. If you have any trouble with the installer, try using a different CD-ROM drive (apple standard drives seem to work best).

You will need Unsupported UtilityX to get X to install on the 8600, and L2CacheConfig to get X to recognize the G3 upgrade.

So I've got Unsupported UtilityX, and L2CacheConfig. I've de-interleaved my RAM. I have installed 9.1 on a second hard drive. I have gotten and run the ATI update/patch (it did not flash the RAM of my 8600 video, but I didn't expect it too). Yet, the install continues to fail. I'm installing on a 2Gb Hd, formated Mac Extended. If I try to format it UFS, the format fails.

Looking at the log at the start of the install, the first error I see is;
/dev/rdisk1s8: CANNOT READ: BLK 16
/dev/rdisk1s8: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY
/dev/rdisk1s8: on /private/var/tmp/Mount6: incorrect super block.

I don't think this is important as when I chose a disk to install onto, it is /dev/rdisk0s6, but I'm not certain.

The next error is ATSFontLoadUnicodeCharacterSet failed error -982.
Repeated twice.

Then a bunch of Cannot Dearchives
filesystem object has an invalid type: 0x0

Probably not important.

Then it writes files, and goes throught the install process until it gets to the "Finishing up" Point, and about 1/3 of the way through the progress bar, it says that the install failed, would I like to try again? I can hit the restart button, and if I let it just restart I get a kernel panic and the machine halts.

What to do?

Whoa, didn't I reply to this thread? Is there a duplicate of it?

Take out the upgrade card, install without the BSD subsystem, THEN install the subsystem and reinstall the card.

Unsupported UtilityX is a great app but you don't always need it. I've installed OSX on my 8600/300 without it (and using the original processor). I've since upped things to a G3/400 on the system and am running 10.1.5 . Works fine. Perhaps it depends on the accelerator.
