If you want your 15" ProBook with a matte screen, you can pay $50 extra. I don't want to stir up an old discussion here, but now everyone can get the config (s)he prefers. Choice is good

Could it be that sanity will finally rule the Apple Marketplace? I'm in shock, in total shock!

Sanity in the Apple Marketplace? OMG. EC/34 is coming back, we'll get eSATA, and a consumer headless desktop is on its way. Yikes.

Well, this is the second `happens as soon as hell freezes over' (first one was the return of FireWire to the 13" model) … so it's not that unlikely, Simon

It would be interesting to see the quality of matte displays these days. I dont think many, or any laptop has them anymore...
Anyone know what the 17" matte display is like?

It's the same as the glossy display with slightly reduced gamut and contrast due to the extra layers of diffusor films.

Plus you get back the old Al bezel around the screen instead of a solid sheet of glass. That means matte buyers again get that nasty groove between bezel edge and screen that's perfect for trapping dust and dirt. The glass panel OTOH is very easy to clean.
Even if you prefer matte over glossy, that's clearly a disadvantage you'll have to live with.

This seems to be the year of Apple backtracking on dumb decisions. Unfortunately, they seem to balance each one out with a new dumb decision to keep the tally even.

This is great news! I really prefer the Al bezel too. Come on, Apple, give us the same option on the 13". They already make this bezel for the MBA, the matte screen part should be easy.

I always thought that I would want glossy for my next MBP, but after seeing the matte on a 17" in the Apple store, I might have to change my mind.
It does look like someone just took the glass off. It seems kinda naked.

Well, it's a bit lighter with the matte option too. Though I don't know why the don't make the bezel black or the seals rubber to make it match...
I've said it before: these glass screens are a dream to clean.

Heh.
I do believe that the glossy screens were a good decision. They're only adding the matte back because the people who absolutely refuse to deal are among the most vocal on the net, not because the matte has more real-world advantages than disadvantages (it doesn't).
These are the same people who haunted the internets for years after the switch to OS X to tell us all about how it was inferior to OS 9 because they could no longer manually assign RAM to their Photoshop.
But hey, if the self-proclaimed "core market" is willing to pony up extra for a display that's unusable in sunlight, why not?

The glossy screens weren't the dumb decision, the dumb decision was making them the only option on a lineup of $2000+ machines.
The matte doesn't have more real-world advantages than disadvantages, but it does have different advantages and disadvantages. I've got a MBP with a glossy screen, and it's not unusable by any means. It is really nice and easy to clean, and it is quite nice-looking for a laptop screen, but it's also pretty annoying to try to use it in a room with fluorescent lighting, or in a room with an open window. I usually end up shutting the blinds and turning off all the lights in order to get rid of the reflections, something I never used to do with my old mattebook. If I bought my MBP today, I'd probably go for the matte. But it all depends on personal taste.
I do find it amusing how the proponents of matte and glossy screens both like to claim the other is unusable outdoors, though.

QFT.
The entire discussion is highly irrational on both sides of the aisle. It's much more a religious debate than anything else. IMHO there's no better or worse. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. In the end it all boils down to personal preference. You should buy what you like best. Don't believe anyone who claims one is objectively better than the other. Ignore the self-procalimed 'graphics/media professionals' (of which there are millions, at least in forums). And most importantly, don't believe anyone who claims you can only get work xyz done with screen uvw. That's all baloney. Get what you like best. Everything else is irrelevant.

Very good point.
Since glass is easier to clean (and to me, at least, the black bezel looks very sleek), my next ProBook will have a glassy display. I hate dust on my display and dust in the corners which is almost impossible to clean. Plus, there are still faint key impressions :hmmm:

I said "sunlight", not "outdoors".
The real professionals I've met choose their tools based on what's available, use them to their best advantage, and deal with the shortcomings until they're worn out or written off and a new set of trade-offs arises.

Yep, this is nice. I do prefer the matte screen. I think they even look better with aluminium finish around the screen. This means I can now upgrade my MacBook Pro again when I need to, which is a good thing™. Everyone is happy again. (except that we have to pay extra to get the matte screen).

So I just got my Macbook Pro matte screen a day early! Hell yes! This screen is great looking. After seeing the silver bezel in person I actually prefer it over the black border. The black border on the glossy model tends to reflect everything and it moves my eyes away from the screen quite a bit. I like how this looks. Very clean.
Installing Snow Leopard now. I'll be post more as I mess with illustrator.

Here's a picture so you can see the difference (assuming hotlink works)

This is pointless, you should compare the two when both screens are switched on and set to a realistic brightness level.

Even then, it's pointless.
We made a test video recently with one of those new-fangled Canon DV cam thingies, and the glossy effect on the 24" iMac is MUCH more pronounced on the video than it was in real life - you could even see the contrast, white balance, and exposure working on the little preview screen to make the reflections as visible as possible without compromising on the screen image. It was quite amazing.
