No, not running Linux - this from the horse's mouth:
http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html
"Voice recording settings:
Low (22.05 KHz, mono)
High (44.1 KHz, stereo)"
!
Anybody try this out? We haven't got them at the store yet...

The higher quality voice recordings were announced from the get-go. But it seems that something like an iTalk is needed (I've not been able to find one site where they've been able to test it). We'll also see how a recording input works at the bottom of the iPod rather than the top in the current setup).

Apparently I haven't been annoying enough in my attempts to get the people who've received the thing to test it.

Even ilounge's reviews commented that they were unable to test the feature out of the box.

According to the iPod manual (available online):
Use andoptional iPod-Compatable microphone (available at apple store) record and transfer to computer (stored as WAV files)
Connect Mic -> Select Record
Start Talking
When done select stop and save, listed by date and time
NOTE: Voice Memos menu item doesn't appear until you connect a microphone.

Is it simply a matter of plugging in a normal microphone with a adapter to suit the headphone out port of the iPods?

If Griffin would release a version of the iTalk for the new iPods, then yes. At the time being, though, no such adapter exists, and Griffin wouldn't tell me if they have any plans to develop one when I called them.

Heh. I contacted them as well. At least they know a need is out there for one, asap.

What adapter would be necessary?
The old iTalk (and Belkin microphone adapter thingie) worked by talking to the remote control port and telling it to load the recording software - this new thing only has the minijack. Conceptually and electronically, there is no difference between a microphone and a speaker, so just plugging in headphones should enable the recording function...
Or does the input only work via Dock connector?
