Did you swallow the bait? What did the Super Bowl ads sell you today?

I've just been LMAO every time I hear "Top Shelf Flavor" and "Bud Light" used in the same sentence.

It's sad, I think, that Stella is so much better than most US "mainstream" beers. I personally like darker beers (and those are here as well, just not terribly "common") but Stella beats the crap out of Bud and Miller just by showing up. Which says something about how lacking in most "beer" qualities those two brands are.
Big hits here in the "imported" category also include Heineken, Beck's, Labatts, Molson, Moosehead (those three imported all the way from Canada!), and Foster's. I've had all but Foster's, and frankly the two European beers fare better than the three Canadians in exactly the same way Stella beats out domestic US beers - by not being nearly as bad.
Commercials for beer? Sure. When are they going to run?
Oh, those commercials. That show people I'd never even want to hang out with in places that don't exist not really drinking anything. Those are supposed to sell beer? Riiiiiiiight.

Stella is an ok beer when put against Bud and its headache-in-a-can ilk. Stella, btw, is a stable-mate of Bud, both being owned by the InBev monster.
In my house, the beer is imported from Kalamazoo.

I think if you care at all about beer you are better off with the more obscure small breweries, don't you have plenty of microbreweries where you are? Or bars that import or specialise in more interesting fare?
Do you guys get brands like Guinness, John Smiths, Caffreys, 6X, Boddingtons? (These are considered mainstream in the UK but are much much darker than lagers)

Guinness is about as common as any large US beer here. It's hard to find a bar that doesn't have it on-tap anymore, and you can buy it in almost any grocery store. I believe the Guinness we get in the US is actually brewed in Canada.
I see Boddingtons once in awhile in the stores. We have our good share of home-grown dark beers, of course. You're right about steering to the microbrews, of course.

Every year I save money for the big game, watch the ads and decide then what to spend it on.
This year I'm buying some Bud Light Platinum. It's everything I love about Bud Light. but with a touch of class.

I hate Superbowl ads. Everything about them.
They are all so by the numbers in their over-produced, clever... but not too clever, hyper corporate "edgy" way.
It's like every company knows what a superbowl ad is supposed to be and they just crank out the same crap... and then everyone watches and pretends like this year's "edgy" beer commercial is amusing or novel in any way.
It's not. Hasn't the world been numbed to this stuff yet? Why is it the exact same song and dance every year?

I was commenting to a friend last night that it's the commercial version of Summer Blockbuster movies. Only far more pointless.
I'm not sure I can remember any Super Bowl commercials of yore; I think Pepsi's rebranding in the mid-ninteties with Woodstock and CIndy Crawford are it.

And yet, one of the most iconic (if not the most iconic) advertisement ever was a Super Bowl ad.

For reasons I can't explain, I woke this AM and I apperently wrote the word "Tab" with a pen all over my walls.
I can only assume this is come sub consciousness craving for the alternative Cola from Coca Cola which I haven't seen sold in a decade+.
Furthermore, I keep shouting "LOSER!" at my reflection every time I walk by a mirror.
What this has to do with Super Bowl commercials s beyond me. I apologize for the off topic post.

The coca cola polar bear fumbling the pass was kind of amusing. The Beckham ad was artful.
I wasn't quite sure why Bud was doing a prohibition-repealed-nostalgia piece, but it was also well done.
I didn't see all of the m&m one, but it seemed like the red one was being annoying.

Not all ads are intended to sell, especially in an event like the super bowl. The simple fact you're talking about the bud in blue bottle indicates it succeeded on one level: you're aware of the product.
Being in the industry, I really liked the Chrysler ad: thought the copywriting was excellent. And it was Clint.
As always, despise the GoDaddy ads. Really enjoyed the G.I.Joe movie trailer, even tho' it's probably going to be terrible. Thought the Kia ad was fun (although I'll never buy a Kia). Didn't like the Toyota Camry spot, but it got a good reaction out of the people I was watching the game with. The Honda spot was fun just to look at the easter eggs.

GI Joe will indeed probably be pretty bad, but I expect it to be "fun bad." Kind of like "Battleship," ya know? But maybe more fun and less wince-inducing? I can hope.
Chrysler has done just about everything right in their "Imported from Detroit" campaign. Except for one thing: they don't use a Detroit ad agency. They use a Portland, OR firm for those ads. They're good, but... My mom worked for a Detroit area agency for 30 years. They're good too. I can't knock Chrysler's ads, but I wish they'd stayed closer to home, ya know?

I thought the Eastwood ad was unimpressive. It initially caught my attention because I recognized the voice and the wording triggered a connection to the "Its morning in America" commercial but once I realized what it was about I spent the rest of the time wondering why they chose him to star in the ad. Its good that they aren't airing it again because I don't think it has replay value.
The Eminem SB spot was far better to communicate the spirit of the campaign, the brand, and the city. Not only was he a relevant spokesperson for Detroit he also brought a new dimension and much needed image make over for Chrysler. And I say that as someone who can't even stand the guy. If the goal of a commercial is give the brand greater appeal to a broader audience then that commercial wins hands down. Just watch the two back to back. The 2011 ad makes people want to buy American, root for Motor city and redefines Chrysler cars' image in a more desirable light.
I think something different could have been done that articulated the same theme if they'd used another famous personality with ties to the city. It may have not had the same grit but it would have been far more effective.

That Eminem one is very good also... choked up a little even. and I liked the Eastwood one. But I suspect they are targeted at different demographics, with different purposes.
You're right Eastwood isn't Detroit... but he is "America." And he's more recognizable than Eminem.

Chrysler ads never stick with me, because every time they start in with the American Spirit™ ho-ha I can't help but think, "Haven't you guys been bailed out by the taxpayers of this country like a half-dozen times at this point?"
Also your cars are boring and can barely compete with bargain Korean brands.

It was twice (in the 1970s and this last time), and this last time has actually profited the taxpayers, so I kind of discount that as a knock against Chrysler. There's also the part about Daimler buying Chrysler to pillage it having been responsible for putting Chrysler in the predicament it was in when it needed the bailing out...
If you want a bargain-priced car, sure, go with a Kia. I like several of their cars for the styling and they are very attractively priced. But no Kia is roomy, has the kind of retro styling that the 300, the Challenger and Charger have. So if it's a matter of taste, that's fine, but that doesn't alter the fact that Chrysler has found and been embraced by a very strong demographic, which says a lot about how they've gone from "too cheaply built" to solid and dependable.
