Apple Store Genius Bars told to replace select white iPhone 4 models with 4S due to constraints | 9to5Mac | Apple Intelligence

Dwindling stock of refurbished iPhone 4 units, and increasing labor costs* means that the bean counters** in Cupertino have given the green light to replacing your old and tired iPhone with shiny, though last years tech, iPhone 4S, when you go for service.

Let's say you crack your LCD. Go to the genius bar and ask for the screen to be replaced (at $0 or $150 depending on Apple Care), pray to Fortuna, and BAM! Refurbished iPhone 4S, no contract, no waiting for contract term completed, no $200.

* whether that means that wages are increasing, or that they are not going down fast enough is in the eye of the beholder
** they might actually think that too much 4S stock is a bad thing for the balance sheet!!!

Huh? You still have the contract with the phone company (it's not tied to the device) and a locked device.

Should have been more specific: no _new_ contract, not necessarily replacing an iPhone 4, but perhaps any of the 3 models before the 4.
