Under 9, I used a nice little shareware app called MacCallerID. You could link the incoming phone number to specific sound files, have text to speech speak the callerID info, log, run Applescripts, all sorts of useful stuff that turned the ring of the phone into more relevant information.
I can only find one CallerID related app for OS X, and it doesn't do this kind of stuff. I've checked MacUpdate and VT. Is there one hiding somewhere else?
Besides the abilites MacCallerID had, it would be very slick if an OS X app could display the caller ID info in a transparent click-through window the way the volume and eject controls do. (I'm just hoping to put an idea in some programmer's head here....)

According to Apple's site:
And if youve got a Bluetooth-equipped cell phone, Address Book can automatically sync with it, alert you when a youve got a incoming call, and display the Caller ID
So you can do it with a cell phone.
I don't know about regular phone-lines tho.

Yeah, all the more frustrating. I'd get much more use of my computer telling me who's on my landline than on my cell.
In retrospect, I really should have put this in 3rd party apps. Oops.

Just wait until more bluetooth landline handsets are realeased. I know that Nortel already has these available for corporate customers.

I should hardly have to buy a new phone to regain an ability I had in the last version of the OS- something which just needs software to work with the hardware I already have.

I had a great idea for a call id software.
A server, that runs in the background sending the information to the client application on some other computers. The info would be linked to the address book and a message window would load like in iCal for notifications, with the name, picture and phone number of the contact.
That would be amazing!
the app and server might run in the backgroud, like the ical helper (found in the ical bundle...) it could have a preference pane to activate it, for the logs, for the login, etc....
With this app, the telephone could ring at your home and know it even if you're at work!!!
It should be easy to make, since everything is documented and you have some caller id codes on sourceforge.
If I have time this summer, I might learn how to code and finally make this one up.
