Hey, I'm a Mac user of years, but just recently got my first Powermac. It's a G5 1.6. Question is, why is ram so expensive for it?

It supposedly accepts a pair of DDR SDRAM PC2700 dimms. I've seen a single 512 dimm for around 30 dollars; what's to keep me from buying two of those and installing them? 512mb of ram from Macmall is over 120$. Why so expensive?

I hope you guys understand my question...

Have a look at Crucial. 512mb PC2700 for $51.40 each. And Guaranteed to work in your mac. I can't say anything about the RAM you've found for around $30 as I don't know anything about it.

Invest in quality RAM, it saves you tons of trouble. That said, take a look at the Crucial memory …

I'ved used Ramjet for a number of Macs, never had any problems. OS X has always had a reputation for being touchy about cheap RAM.

Check out NewEgg.com, they have some Corsair ValueSelect 1 gig sticks for $95 that work great in the G5 and they also have some Rosewell 1 gig sticks for about $80 that work with the G5. Both are good ram especially the Corsair, i have 3 gigs of the Corsair split between my PowerMac and my iMac.
PowerMac G5 - 2.0 4 1/2 Gig Ram - Tiger 10.4.2
30" Apple Monitor - LaCie d2 Tripple 320 Gig
iMac G5 1.8 1 1/2 Gig Ram 20" - Tiger 10.4.2
Amd64 - Gamer - Water cooled
