My mum is looking for a new computer and has asked me for advice. I own an Al PB15' which i got in october as my first mac. Ive recommed macs to her as i couldnt be happier with mine, but warned her that i did pay alot. All she wants a computer for is basic home use like internet access, microsoft office etc. Anyway i was looking on the apple store site and noticed the very reasonable price of the emac and thought there must be catch...is there?

I was in the same kinda situation (but with my dad, and i had an iMac)
I told my dad (whom never really uses computers) to get an eMac (1ghz) and he couldn't be happier, itunes, internet ,email and word, thats what he uses it for and thinks it's great!

there isn't a catch for people that use it for apps like that, but yeah , for people that want a bit more "grunt" the emac probably isn't for them.

I say go for it!

The catch is that most newer 3D games run like crap on it.

But that wasn't a requirement for his mum, so there is no catch

Consider this: a lot of the PCs that sguys' mom would be looking at would probably have "Intel Extreme Graphics" (read: slow integrated video that draws on system RAM), so the eMac might be snappier for what little 3D might be used - and probably some of the Quartz Extreme effects as well.

Well, the machine takes up a lot of room on your desk. It's OK for most people, but a turnoff for some. Also, the monitor's video quality is only average. It's not bad, but it's not top end either.
