I am a student developer, and I was wondering about how long it will take for Tiger to come in the mail after the retail release date?

I posted it in another thread (can't remember which one ...) that I think we'll see them in the May dev mailer. Just a guess, though. I don't expect them anytime before that, but I've never had any experience with it either ...

I would expect the May mailing or the June. With Panther, I ended up spending the 70 dollars for the education version (b/c I wanted it so bad). I remember getting the mailing 3-6 weeks after release of the OS.

I've recieved at least two copies of Panther in the mail as a student developer, and was expecting to recieve Tiger as well. I guess we'll see.

I think you're thinking of prerelease software. I'm pretty sure every ADC member gets the GM version.

Don't the GM/retail versions of the OS's show up on ADC within 48 hours of the announcement?

Yes, but Student developers don't have access to those. My guess is that Tiger won't reach Student developers until August at least.

It is true that ADC Student membership includes system software mailings. However, given that the membership codes $200/year, I would advise against getting it if you just want the software. Students don't normally get development seeds, though (very rare) exceptions have been made in the past. Students got OSX 10.0 DP4, for example, but that was the last time they ever got a development seed as far as I'm aware.

ADC Student Membership is $99, not $200. This is cheaper than the $129 retail price of Mac OS X, but more expensive than the educational price of $69. And considering the gap between releases is > 1 year now, too...

Hmm. I thought I remembered it being $200 back when I had it. Have they lowered the price or something?

It's been $99 for as long as I can remember. The ADC Mailing is $199, is that what you're thinking of?

I just got my ADC newsletter and it states:

"If your ADC membership includes access to system software, you'll receive Tiger in the May Developer Mailing, scheduled to begin shipping on April 29."

So hopefully that means student developers should be getting Tiger in early May.

Yep, I got the same email today. Looks like that clears the issue up. We should have Tiger in the first week of May, give or take.

According to this page, there are only 4 ADC types: Online (free), Select ($500/year), Premier ($3500/year). Not mentioned in that page is Student Membership ($99/year). There is no info on whether Student ADC entitles to mailings (OS or not).

Are Student Developers ($99 a year) entitled to a Tiger copy? Does it work if the ADC membership starts after the OS release? Are only Mailing members going to get

I read on Student Developer list that we would get it in May, the question is when do they mail them?

From the ADC mailer:

1 Apple to Ship Mac OS X "Tiger" on April 29

Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger" and Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger" Server are

scheduled to ship on Friday, April 29. In the press release,

Apple CEO Steve Jobs describes Mac OS X Tiger as "the most

innovative and secure desktop operating system ever created."

Developers can use the new core technologies and tools in Tiger

to build the next generation of innovative Mac OS X applications.

If your ADC membership includes access to system software, you'll

receive Tiger in the May Developer Mailing, scheduled to begin

shipping on April 29.

Ya loon! Step 1) backup, step 2) install. Don't bother waiting, what's the worst that could happen? How can you pass up the latest-and-greatest™??
