So, I'm watching Fox news on television and Steve Harrigan, their weatherman, is reporting from outside a Flying J truck stop and he's standing OUT IN THE WIND to show that it is windy out where he is. Meanwhile, he's reporting that if he - or anyone else - gets hurt that "no ambulance or rescue can help."

In the meantime, he continues to stand out there with his ubiquitous weatherman nylon windbreaker so that he can "report" on the weather. He just fell down and a piece of roofing almost him.

to the hurricane weatherman who stand out IN the storm to report.

I doubt most of these weathermen choose to report like this, so "stupid" is a touch harsh. The network demands it, and they must follow orders if they want to keep their jobs.

Eventually, one of them will die, there will be a bunch of commentary about how senseless it was to have people standing in evacuated areas, and they will stop having them go to those places.

No, it's not true that the network "demanded" it. In fact, the Fox news broadcaster was telling him, "Steve, you know this is not a part of your job description. Please go to a safe place." He said, "I know, I know, but I want people to understand what the wind in a hurricane is really like."

And, yes, I'm watching it. I have friends up there and I'm worried about them.

Then I'd find different employment. Being a "weatherman" isn't worth losing my life over, and if they think it is then they are stupid.

And you have what right to disapprove of this man's actions, Cody? He's not hurting you. At worst, what he's doing does not affect you at all. At best, it's a service to people to help them see what's really going on and why they should help with relief efforts for this sort of thing.

Whether the network demands it or it's themselves who choose to do it, I find it amusing that they pull these stunts. wallinbl may be right. Eventually, one of them will get seriously hurt or even die as a result of one of these stunts and only then will people realize how retarded this is.

As for helping with relief efforts, not really sure I buy that. There's plenty of coverage after these natural disasters that should take care of that.

no one is disapproving, it's the guy's choice. If he wants to get killed by getting his head cut off by a 150mph roof tile, that's his prerogative. However, it's still stupid.

I'm smart enough to know that a person doesn't go out and play in 100MPH winds without risking their life. One of them WILL eventually end up dead over this nonsense.

In this context, I see it more as an indication of a bad decision. Going out in hurricane to do a weather report = bad decision.

I don't think any of the people reporting out there would call it "play."

I agree that it's ridiculous to have reporters out in this weather, but I don't think it's fair to place the blame with only them.

Just one question.

Are the "weathermen" on the major stations in the US meteorologists or just some regular good looking people?

Funny! I just discovered this thread immediately after posting something along the same lines pertaining to Fox News (edit: Fox News contributors) being idiotic... This also really made my blood boil:

http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.php?p=2672624

I think I'll continue to not watch this channel for news.

Thanks

But if that's the case I don't see the problem with them being out and about in weather like this. Just like any biologist would want to see a lion up close (or some of the thousands of examples possible) or a geologist would want to see a volcano up close I'd suspect a meteorologist would want to "see" a hurricane up close. Just they way people are.

Nothing beats good hurricane video. Wait... anything beats it.

I do enjoy good Japanese typhoon coverage. Same difference.

Heh. From the link in your sig:

They dig with their teeth?
Sure do. Twenty-five percent of their musculature is in their jaws. Their powerful incisors extend outside their lips. Some people think they look like hot dogs with teeth!
That's one way of looking at it ...

Btw, I couldn't stand looking at the nasty thing either - just block the image from turtle's photobucket directory and you're set.

Fair and balanced: Fox News is the MOST sensationalist of all the national cable news sources. That is to say, if they could make a "national security" story about the ducks that nested near the Treasury this summer, they would. And of course the "standing in the hurricane" schtick was done first (or at least earlier) and far better by The Weather Channel. If I ever see Jim Cantore or Mike Sidel getting off a plane where I am, I'll take their seat on the departing flight-they NEVER go anywhere where the weather is unseasonably "nice." Kind of makes you wonder what they did to tick off the Weather Channel brass.

It really does bug me when they get "reporters" to go someplace and report on a situation there, but they don't make them do ANY research. One (I think ABC) female reporter was talking about the city just west of New Orleans where the airport is. It's called "Metarie" (met ar ee), but the chick said "met airee." I wonder how she pronounced "New Orleans." One other reporter was talking about a city on the western Mississippi coast called "Bay St Louis," and called it "Bay OF St Louis." That's not even ignoring local pronounciation, that's adding words! Get a grip people! You lose all your credibility by saying things dumb.

Edit to add: I forgot to mention Jin Wicked's comic. She's GREAT!

Every time there's a storm on TV, the wife and I look for Anderson Cooper and his big potted plant. He was covering one last year and he had a big plant that blew over in the wind. They must have shown that 100 times.

Why is it so trendy to hate FOX? Are there any news networks anyone does watch? Tom Tucker, Diane Simmons and Asian reporter Trisha Takinawa are the best newscasters I've seen.

I'm not sure that it's trendy, but a lot of people tend to believe that most of the news they show isn't actually news. I wouldn't know myself as I don't watch news networks, but it's what I hear. As for myself, I read the local newspaper, the LA Times website and pay some attention to Google News for big headlines. Every now and then I'll watch the local news. Of course, there's the occasional stop at CNN or Fox News while channel surfing and catching one of these weather people in the middle of some huge storm or running in some unbelievable heat.

Yeah, I stay away from tv news, unless it's Melissa Theuriau, in which case I'd pay extra to watch. However, I find myself at The Drudge Report quite often. What do you think of Trisha Takinawa?

This discussion just gave me a very amusing image in my head with Geraldo Rivera in the middle of a hurricane getting hit in the head by a piece of debris with a big caption underneath that says "OWN3D!!!1!"

I'd pay extra to watch Ms. Theuriau as well, but I don't have access to her news show, just the screen caps and a short video here and there

Trisha Takinawa is probably twice the reporter a lot of these weather people on CNN and Fox News are

If disliking Fox News is trendy, then I'm a trendsetter. I have dispised their complete lack of even the appearance of journalism, objectiveness, fact-checking or analysis since they hit the cable. And their editorial spin-which, by the way is anything but kept with editorial content-makes them sound like the paid mouthpiece of the radical right. And I can read tabloids more comfortably when they're not shouting at me. Oh, and I REALLY hate how they try to make every story "meaningful" to every viewer by finding some poor soul who is devastated by whatever it is they're "reporting" on and can't stop crying long enough to be interviewed.

Other than that, they're ok.

Conservatives think the rest of the media is liberal, so they made a conservative news channel. Liberals are highly offended by it. It's really just sort of funny. Anyone that watches it can see that it's slanted, but the liberals feel the need to run around pointing it out constantly. I'm surprised they feel threatened by it. Conservatives don't feel threatened by Jon Stewart or Bill Maher.

Maybe if Jon Stewart and Bill Maher were on during prime time and were presented as being a certified source for accurate journalism, this would change.
