Below is an image of a product based on the Radeon 9000 (formerly known as RV250), which will go on sale later this month. The next-generation Radeon 9700/10000 (formerly known as R300) will be announced later this week, and go on sale next month. The Radeon 9000 boards are expected to cost $200, while the next-generation 9700/10000 boards will run $350 to $400.

The 9000 is a tweaked Radeon 8500 I believe, the 9700/10K is the one to look out for

timster,

The image is not bogus. But it was sent to the site by the Korean hardware vendor (Unitech)...so it's not a "camera picture" of the box. A review of Unitech's older 8500-based board is available here.

For those curious as to the specifications for the Radeon 9000 boards, click here. And here's another article with release information on the next-generation Radeon 9700/10000 (R300). Below is shot of a different Radeon 9000 board:

I was being sarcastic. (As the smiley was supposed to imply.) I know of the news regarding the new boards, and I'm not surprised that pics have leaked.

Lets just hope that Apple and Motorola can provide us with some hardware that can keep these new cards (if Mac versions are released) fed with data.

I don't know whether or not it's a great thing ATi isn't using decent cooling solutions on those cards. GeForce4 Ti cards come with giant heatsinks and RAM coolers. I hope that's an indication of nVIDIA's heat inefficiency rather than the performance of ATi's next product offerings.

The GF4 is about 5% larger in area than the GF3 but still uses the 150nm trace sizes which makes it run a bit warmer at high speeds. The NV30 will be the first nVidia chips to use the 130nm manufacturing process.

Since when did ATI start licensing their technology to third-party card makers for retail sale?

If this is true, does this mean that ATI is starting to follow NVIDIA's business plan?

Will this also mean that ATI will finally start focusing on improving their pathetic driver support for both Mac and Windows platforms?

edit: I'm also sick of ATI and will never touch their hardware again. NVIDIA all the way!

For now, ATI is producing their own boards, while also selling their chips to other vendors. ATI management determined that this had to be done in order to remain competitive with nVidia. Sales of non-ATI Radeon 8500 boards surpassed ATI's own board sales some time ago. ATI is gradually moving out of the less-profitable board manufacturing business.

Finally, they CLAIM to understand and acknowledge their driver support was **** poor in the past, and they are doing something about it (or so they say). You can read more about the initiative right here. Hopefully, Mac users will be next on tap...

I am curious to see whether Apple will adopt the Radeon 9700/10000 for its systems when those boards ship next month. The next-generation Radeon 9700/1000 is said to be 30% faster than the top-end nVidia Geforce4 Ti4600, and nVidia's next-generation boards won't be widely available before late October or early November. If they stick to nVidia only, that would mean two months, and possibly three, of having an inferior top-performance graphics card.
