I happenned into a free B&W G3, (rev a) and a cheap used G4 500 mhz ZIF upgrade card. It seems to funcion normally at every-day tasks, but whenever I launch RC-5, it panics within 10 seconds. The log reads:

panic(cpu 0): Uncorrectable machine check: pc = 00000000000035BC, msr = 0000000002043000, dsisr = 42000000, dar = 00000000E0011000
AsyncSrc = 0000000000000000, CoreFIR = 0000000000000000
L2FIR = 0000000000000000, BusFir = 0000000000000000

(etc)

Which I thought was interesting because I've never seen that "Uncorrectable machine check" bit in a Panic log before.

Is it just me, or is this not a supported config for RC-5? Running OS 10.3.9, downloaded the most recent client.

Usually only see this with RC5 when the chip is overheating... do other 100% CPU apps make it panic? Is the heatsink well connected?

another idea is to get hold of the powerlogix cpu controller utility and try downclocking the cache ratio

i had a similar problem with a sonnet zif until tweaking in cpu director (which is what the powerlogix utilty is called)

good luck

Turns out Photoshop running filters for more than 2 or 3 minutes is panicking it, too. Been trying to figure out the L2 cache thing. The heatsink seems seated, but it's certainly not very warm. Is thermal paste a bad idea on CPU heatsinks?
