I've seen some people mention they have 2x512 or 2x1GB when they have RAM installed in their G5s. Is this a matter of convenience - as they already have a stick of 512 and upgraded, or do G5's require pairs of RAM? I ordered a dual 1.8 G5 yesterday, and want more than the stock 256 that comes in it, obviously. Can I get a 1gb stick and have 1.25GB, or would I have to get 2x512s and orphan the original 256?
The RAM configuration is one thing I wasn't too clear on while looking @ the specs, and poking around here. Thanks for any input you may have.

With a G5, you have to buy all of your RAM in pairs... i.e. dual channel RAM. So if you want to add 1GB, you need to buy 2X512MB or 4X256MB, if you want Gig Sticks (1GB stick), you'll need to add a minimum of 2GB to your 256MB.
I am sure this applies to the Dual Processor G5's, but I could be wrong on the Single G5's...
Also, don't buy cheap RAM... it's worse that no RAM. If you pay less than $99 for a 512, or $265 or so for a GIG, you're getting crap.
Get Crucial or LifeTime, I think they're the best and also not too expensive.

Thanks for the info. The Crucial RAM isn't that bad - 2x512 is only $98 each.

Another quick question -
I know the RAM has to be installed in pairs. I bought a dual 1.8, so it came with 2x128 sticks of RAM. I also bought 2x512 from crucial this week. Since there are 4 slots, can I leave the 2x128 in there, or does the RAM need to be ALL one type - 4x128, 4x512, etc?

As you state, ram has to be installed in pairs. Pair = 2.

as long as the pairs are the same size, you're ok.
