I've always been afraid of glass desk tops, so I've avoided getting anything like that. I'm more of a solid wood kind of guy anyway...

Doesn't that paint keep you awake at night, dreamryche? I looks like it glows in the dark.

So far I'm loving it. I want to dig into the new iMovie this weekend. I've been sitting on a tape full of footage for over a year that I have been wanting to edit down, the new iMac will give me a great opportunity to put something together.

By the way, I am loving this new keyboard. Feels so much like a notebook keyboard, but a little less mushy.

I must admit that I love the new keyboards too, the only problem that I have is that the cable is not long enough. Thank goodness I have a wireless one too.

Yeah, the new keyboards are great. I bought one for my white iMac. It's nicey to type for long periods of time with no strain or pain.

Mine came with a USB extension cable. Maybe yours was hidden?

imitchellg5, when did you get yours, and how did you get it? If it comes with the iMac, it is not supposed to come with an extension cable. If it comes with a Mac Pro, it probably should need the extension...

Oh, I bought it separately. I figured that they would include one with the Macs though...

Does anyone have a picture of a 24" iMac '08 next to a 24" monitor? Preferably a Dell 24" widescreen monitor. I want to see how tall the 24" iMac will be in relation to the monitor. I guess I could always just look up the specs on the iMac, but I'm a visual learner

Thanks!

not a very god pic, my Elph doesn't do well in low light situations. i love my iMac! i received it a couple days ago. the screen on mine is very even and, frankly, after some calibration (the default profile is awful, with a stupid gamma level, particularly, and an overly cold temperature, in my opinion) i prefer it to both my Viewsonic (which was a very nice monitor when i bought it, and which has also been calibrated to be as close as i could get it to the iMac's screen) and the 20 inch ACDs that we have where i work. it's nice using my MBP as a laptop now, instead of a desktop replacement. i had been using laptops as my main machine for years (a series of PowerBooks and then a couple MBPs), and it's so nice to have a real desktop machine again.

it's a Speck SeeThru. i went through a few cases before i found this one, and i love it, because it doesn't add bulk, as its extremely thin plastic. thanks, i'm pretty happy with my system!

Right now I'm trying to make the choice of a MBP or an iMAc for my next computer, what do you like more about using a desktop?

(Very nice computer by the way. The screen looks phenomenal in that picture. Very crisp and bright.)

the iMac is a joy to use. it's very quiet and cool, compared to the MBP. it's definitely faster, especially regarding the hard drive (handbrake just flies on this, whereas it gets bogged down quickly on the MBP). the screen is great (it was actually on the second to last brightness setting in that pic). it has surprisingly good speakers. i have a very good stereo, but i find myself just using the iMac speakers for background listening, as they are very mellow and conducive to helping me get work done, as opposed to the main system, because when my stereo is on i usually get sucked into the music and quit working. one of the main reasons i love it is simply because it is a desktop. i no longer have to worry about having to take stuff apart and unplug stuff to take my computer to work or class, because now my MBP is dedicated to that task. it might sound silly, but that was a pretty major consideration in the purchase. i really love the machine, i think it's the best computer i've ever owned (and i used to be a big time gamer and overclocker 5 or 6 years ago, so it's really saying something).

That's awesome to hear. I originally wanted a MBP to use with an external display/keyboard/hard drive/etc but now I'm starting to realize that kills the portability factor.

After seeing some of the broken-glass-desk pics on the net, I talked my roommate into removing the glass panels of that exact desk and replacing them with wood. Worked out well!

Not an iMac, just to show you the desk:

My trusty old PowerBook G4's Video RAM finally fried, so I went refurbished and picked up a stock 20" iMac and a last-rev MacBook Pro. I love having two computers, it's a refreshing change from docking and undocking the laptop constantly.

I've always been confused as to why some people have an external monitor oriented vertically like that. I've noticed it a lot though. What's the benefit?

Yeah I can fit iTunes, Mail, iChat and Stickies on there. Or sometimes I'll throw a Safari window with a Photoshop tutorial, and I can see more of the webpage at once that way. I'm not set on it though because my external monitor is fairly cheap and the colors aren't quite right at that viewing angle. Nice for productivity though.
