I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced difficulty with IE5 and Yahoo! Chat - please let me know if so, and if there is a fix. Thanks!

Yahoo Chat has had a lot of problems the last few days, so your issues might not be IE-related.

That said, I have indeed found that IE 5 has some annoying behaviors w.r.t. Yahoo Chat... first of all, everything freezes while the applet is loading. Once it's running, it seems I have to click twice to get almost anything to work, like the "More" button. It's like the first click pops the dialog box up, but it takes a second click to bring it to the front. Same with chatting; you have to click twice in the little box where you type, because the first click just activates the left side of the screen.

I don't know whether these things are Yahoo's fault or MS's; it may be that Yahoo has a lot of non-standard stuff going on, or that they figured out how to make it work in IE 4.5 but haven't put in IE 5 workarounds yet. (For the record, I've NEVER gotten Yahoo Chat to work in Netscape.)

Until the dust settles, I'm still using 4.5 for sites that seem shaky with 5.0.

I agree. The problem is definately IE5, as Y!Chat works fine on 4.5. Unfortunately with 5, the main chat window does not appear where it should - I only get the lower corner of it at the top of my browser. Frustrating.

Yahoo hates Mac users. They offer no support for the Mac.

Check out:

companion.yahoo.com
and
TrueSync

None are availabe for the Mac. This sucks.

Yep, Yahoo seems to quite dislike us... More on this:
http://messenger.yahoo.com : extended features only for PCs http://chat.yahoo.com : Voice chat, but only on Windows http://financevision.yahoo.com : simply works only on Windows http://my.yahoo.com/ticker.html: Newsticker, only for Windows http://games.yahoo.com/top/review.html : Yahoo Games Reviews: no Mac Coverage

YES!! I noticed this too. MSIE certainly does not work for me in Yahoo Chat.

Yeah Yahoo Chat often does not work for NN either, but MSIE has some severe problems.

I like MSIE a lot (and I really hate to admit that) but I now only use it to get an approximate idea of how fonts size differently for MSIE users when I make my web sites.

There are many great ideas in MSIE 5, but too many things do not work right and I cannot waste my time with it.

I am VERY annoyed about Yahoo neglecting Mac users altogether, especially seeing as it's so popular. How hard would it be to hire a few developers to create decent Mac versions of their software?

I'd like to encourage anyone who uses (or would like to use) Yahoo services on a Mac to participate in their "User Research" program: http://promo1.yahoo.com/usability/bi...gi?source=main

all you need to do is go to Apple's website and download the ABSOLUTE newest versions of their MRJ. and it works like a charm! even 9.0.4 DOES NOT inclue the newest MRJ. once you download and install it you should have no problems other than a slight freeze while IE starts the MRJ up. but other than that it works GREAT! still though, yahoo sucks for not having a DECENT messenger program!

The latest version of MAC OS Runtime for Java (MRJ 2.2.3) does nothing to help IE 5 in Yahoo chat. The Chat Applet has never loaded using IE 5.

Because I hate bloated programs, I use Netscape 4.08 Standalone as a backup browser. IT WORKS PERFECTLY WITH YAHOO CHAT. The Chat Applet loads every time, no freezes or disconnects.I'm even using that buggy Bluelight free internet access.
