I wanted to do some cleaning and thought I would back up my messages in my library / mail folders. Then I realized that emails are saved - but only have a number for its file name. If I were to have to try to go through and find and old email via 1000's I would go insane. How do you guys back up your old emails so- if needed you could find them quickly?

Mail seems fine with the thousands upon thousands of emails I've imported into it fro Eurora, as well as the thousands I've received since. I back up my Users folder daily, so if anything ever does go south, I've got the whole shmeer (including mail's database) on my backup drive.

I had a problem once where Mail was crashing upon moving junkmail into the junk forlder, but a quick Google search found the answer to that -- otherwise it's been really trouble-free.

I don't archive emails, I leave them on my IMAP account, in dedicated folders, and and have Apple Mail download copies locally. Those local copies are then also backed up by TimeMachine.

This is probably a first for me -- moving a technical topic into the Lounge, but I think it's general enough and doesn't fit OS X, Applications or other sections.

My current Mail.app inbox has several thousand messages in it, and Mail is as snappy as ever, so I don't worry about it.

I keep most emails on the server, but I back them up anyway (actually twice).
Time Machine and a manual backup as well.

I use Entourage. Twice a year I just back up the database, unless something SO important comes in that I need to back it up earlier.

I have Gmail as my main email so no problems here with worrying about running out of room or backing up emails.
