Was just browsing around in the Apple store today and noticed that Apple Financing through TD is now available, a option that has been there for the US store for a few years now. This is a nice addition and a long over due one. This is more a FYI thread since I can't see much discussion about it.

Unless things have changed, Apple's financing terms suck. Buying it with a credit card should be a better deal for 99% of the population if you can't afford to pay for it in one shot.

When I was 20, I borrowed $2,500 from the bank to buy my first computer. 6 months later I owed more money on it then it was worth. Looking back it was a terrible deal... but it did get me a computer and helped me start my career... so who knows...

How long do the payment plans usually last? Wouldn't saving $35/month for a year work better for most people?

You're not going to get much of a Mac for $420. For some financing is necessary.

haha, I think I meant to write 3 years since that is a reasonable average life for a Mac.

It can be useful in some situations, like for example iMac gets hit by foot ball, knocking it off the desk causing to much damage to repair. Spending the next 6 months saving up the dough isnt much of a option if you need a computer now, financing is a option. The only thing good about going through Apple is if you have it paid in 3 months its interest free. Personally would use my line of credit which is only 6%.

I think we should think of more useful situations:

- For example iMac gets smashed in a violent domestic dispute
- For example iMac gets accidentally front-kicked during a P90x session
...

OK, but why stop at iMacs? Apple portables have been expanding and exploding for years.

at iMacs or for iMacs

Most people who buy a portable with no real need to but that fact its portable are wasting money. The computer is used as a desktop its entire life and used as a laptop maybe a few times. You get way more machine for less with the iMac. People that already have older macbooks I generally say keep it as your portable and replace the battery every couple years if you actually travel a lot and go with a desktop. Most people only do email, web surf and IM when on the go which any older laptop can do. For those that ACTUALLY travel and a lot a laptop makes sense.

Besides every example given applies to the Macbook's as well.

- Macbook Pro logic board fries 2.5 years after you bought it, effectively rendering it worthless, and you didn't get the extended warranty*

*True story. I bought an iMac. Not with financing.

Like ort888, I too took out a loan when I was young. The computer depreciates faster than the principle on the loan. And after a couple of years, it sucks to have to pay for something that you know is outdated.

Now, I put money away in a high-interest savings account when I don't need it. Then the money is there for when I do.

But if you need a computer now, and don't have the money, and if you are reliable with money, find a friend or relative that has a line of credit/credit card with a better interest rate than what Apple financing offers. Have them buy your Mac. Pay them back over whatever time you agree on at their interest rate +1%. Win-win.

I noticed it last weekend and signed up.

I can pay anything I would buy off in 3 months, so it's a good deal for me; if not only because futureshop seems to purposely sell defunct Apple products.

Oh and BTO for same as cash is also good!

If you can't afford a new Mac, meaning you'd have to finance for a year or something to get it, then consider getting an old refurb. If you're that short on cash, you don't need to have the latest and greatest.
