I released Renew 1.0.3 tonight!

You can get a one week trial serial from that page, check it out.

edit: If you're wondering what Renew is, it's like Software Update for all your non-Apple applications!

MacUpdate and VersionTracker _both_ refuse to list Renew because it competes with them...

macshareware.net and macosxapps.com both have no problem posting Renew so the listings on those sites should be updated within a day or two.

I'd be getting more hits if I was on VersionTracker or MacUpdate, but there isn't much I can do about it. I have to rely on blogs/news sites/forums like this one to get the word out until more people know about Renew

you should list it on Hyper Jeff

http://osx.hyperjeff.net/Apps/

it's number two on a google search of "os x apps"

it's just a preference but I like his search tool better than macupdate and both better than vt.

Thanks for the suggestion Truepop, I'm already there!

Although I can't remember if I submitted it or not.

Oops!

I made a small error in part of my server code when I released 1.0.3... It's fixed now, so if

1) You didn't see many updates being shown
and
2) All of them took you to my page

That has been fixed now and Renew is actually functioning.

I modified two files, noticed the error in one, but forgot to fix it in the other one. I've been so busy studying for my physics and calculus mid terms this week that I didn't even notice!

You don't need to re-download or anything, the error was entirely server side.

This looks like just the ticket ! Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work through a firewall (at least, one requiring a password). Software Update does - so you really need to add this feature.

Nethertheless, I will give this a try from my home machine. Keeping up to date with software releases is the bane of my life !

Thanks Gee4orce,

I don't know why Renew wouldn't work from behind a firewall. Firewalls generally block inbound connections, and allow all outbound connections.

It's very strange because Renew communicates with the database using HTTP on port 80. So if you can load my website I'd assume that you could use Renew.

Anyway, you may want to check what sort of rules are setup on the firewall if you have access to that or know someone who does

I think there is a good chance that some rule is interfering with Renew...

Anyway, let me know if it works from home!

I should really have said 'authenticated proxy', not 'firewall'. ie. a proxy server that requires you to log in with a username and password to access the internet.

Some progs work just fine (eg. NewsFire) whereas others just silently fail (eg. NetNewsWire). So, you need to be using whatever http framework that NewsFire uses !

Not that I care any more - today is my last day in this stinkin' job !

That makes a little more sense, others have told me Renew isn't working w/ their proxy setups. I'm using CURL/CURLhandle to send and recieve data.

I'll look into what NNW uses.

BTW: If Renew was giving you an error in the console about a framework- that has been fixed.

Right now Renew supports these archive formats for the installer:

.dmg
.dmg.gz
.gz
.zip
(It also recognizes packages and most third party installer applications)

I've got stuffit about 70% supported in my current build. Are there any other common formats? These are the ones I see most; I think that with stuffit supported, I should be covered...

I'm also working on an app which will integrate w/ Renew, but I'm also going to release it stand-alone for free... I'll post a preview here when I've got it more refined .

GeeForce, how did Renew work out for you from home?
