I'm getting conflicting results using Google. Can someone explain to me if the ODB-II connector can be read in real time to display MPH/KPH, RPMs, etc.

I'm working on a car computer and am wondering if it's worth the money to invest in a ODB-II cable and serial converter. At the very least I would know if it's safe to continue to drive my pickup into a service station when the engine light goes on, or if I should pull over immediately. However, I just thought it'd be neat to have a digital speedometer when I'm not actively using the carputer (for passengers.)

Yes, depending on the make and model of your car, there are several OBD-II interfaces that will let you read the data in real time on your computer. I have a simple handheld scanner that will monitor data about 3 times a second, and I know the interfaces for computers have much higher resolution than that because of the processing power available to them.

If you buy an interface (about $100-150 for most good ones) they usually come with the software. There are some out there with built in USB--could make your life easier than using a usb-serial adapter.

Correct. I have an OBD II computer tuning device that lets me view and log data in real time. There's a device called the Scangauge that will do it all for about $160. I'm waiting for the OBD wi-fi adaptor that hooks up my iPod to my car.

OK, cool. This is gonna be great. I can use the data to calculate a budget for road trips, mileage, etc. Yeah, I can do it on a piece of paper, but it's cooler if I have a nifty graph and stuff.

Speaking of which:

Yep. Rev Lite is out for free, which reads info from the accelerometers and they claim that a wi-fi/OBD II device is in the works, at which point the full app will be released. I've been very interested in this for quite a while now, I'm hoping it's not vaporware.
